Halfords are selling 5w/40 fully synthetic oil for half price. £14.99 for 5
litres. It's car stuff but my bike has a dry clutch so :p

Personally I wouldn't use fully synthetic, unless you plan on track
days. Might be wise to wonder *why* it's half price!

Out of interest why? I've been using Mobil 1 in my KRS's for 15 years or
    so with no ill effect.

Andy Hewitt emerged from their own little world to say
I like to live on the edge: also today, I went into Iceland and bought a
half price Chicago Pizza for 99p.

Halfords is no different to Iceland. Loss leaders and all that shit. The
oil has the same spec. list as many branded items.

I only use it for topping up between services anyway. Used to be 500ml per
1000 miles until 20k. Now more like 1 litre per 6000 miles. This is typical
    for a BMW boxer apparently.

I'm too lazy to do an actual service. I believe my dealer uses Castrol GPS
    (semi-synth) as recommended by BMW.

As to the synth/semi/mineral argument: paging SteveH

I've always used it in all my bikes with no clutch slip at all. I'll
pick some up soon then, as my CG and Bandit are coming up for a change soon.

Depends how you ride on the road, dunnit? ;-)

Prolly cos most things *don't really* need fully synth and folk that'll
shell out for overboard protection want to buy 'a branded' product. If I
could get half price fully synth Halfords own bike oil half price I'd clear
the shelf. But car oil's too dodgy for wet clutch bikes cos its got extra
    anti-friction shite in it.

Riding round town in the winter is much harder on an oil than a track
    day imo.

In days gone by I used to run a Kawasaki GT550 shaftie in London. The
only oil I bunged into it was Mobil-1 and it worked fine. The odd thing
was that with any other oil [1] when the engine got a tad over-warm I'd
get clutch drag, but I'd never get slippage with Mobil-1.

[1] dear pedant for values of "any other oil" please note that I have
not tested every fscking brand under the sun.

Yes, but fully synth isn't the answer to that either. It still doesn't
prevent the usual winter problems. Synthetic oil is designed to
withstand high stress, high temperature conditions.

I have still to find anybody that can tell me that using fully synthetic
has increased the life of their engine.

I'd still use no more than a semi-synth oil. Indeed I use Morris Oils in
my FJ (as supplied by the FJ club), and that's a plain mineral oil.

No, you probably won't. But I'll bet you could have used a normal oil
for 15 years with no ill effect too. I have!

Many short trips without getting up to temperature is definitely hard on
oil, harder perhaps than a track day. However, 30 miles round town
against 30 miles at race speeds in one go is, I'd say, certainly the
    lesser of the two.

Multiple short trips in winter is not where a fully synthetic oil gives
the best performance. You'd be far better to use a mineral oil and
    change it more often.

I've found that when using Mobil 1 my K's have used virtually zero oil
between changes, feel "livelier" and smoother.

Plus the peace of mind of knowing it's got the best protection
    available.

I think your confusing the old boxers for the K's Loz ... I've had 5
K-RS's and all have been more reliable than any bike I had previously
(except my Z1R and Z650 although by 40,000 miles they too needed valve
    guides, cam chains and tensioners).

The RD's I've had whilst great fun, had a regular appetite for pistons &
    rings and swing arm bushes.

    The KLR600 ate its crankshaft.

The Honda's ... just plain shite chocolate cams and camchain tensioners.

    The SP370 ... snapped it's kickstart gears.

The GPZ900 choccy cams, cam chain and tensioner.

The GSXR1100 sprang a leak from its radiator/oil cooler.

On top of the few mentioned above seeing no end of customers with blown
up z250's and GPz305's, GPZ900's, GPX750's invariably with camchain or
    cam related issues.

So to infer that Japanese bikes are some sort of epitome of reliability
    is way off the mark.

In about 18 years of 8v K-RS ownership, all I've had go wrong was one
throttle position sensor. Perhaps I've just been lucky ?
