Motorcycle thief leaves pets as security
    August 17 2006 at 03:49AM

Sydney - Australian police warned motorcycle owners on Wednesday to be
wary of a brazen thief who is failing to return from test rides after
leaving a pet dog behind as security.

Western Australia Police said the man had stolen two expensive
motorcycles advertised in the classifieds sections of newspapers, each
time taking them for a test drive and abandoning a dog.

The animals were being kept in a local authority pound and faced being
put down if they were not claimed, police added.

Yes. News organisations will report anything on a slow day.

Why would Western Australian police be commenting on something which has
been happening in Sydney or, conversely, why would an article reporting
something taking place in WA have Sydney in the dateline, Betty?

  6. I see what you're saying, it could be a crock. I learned a long time ago
not to believe everything in the newspaper.

On the other hand, having worked on a newspaper, I see that this is a
South African report. The South African paper that reported it may have
only one Australian correspondent, who would probably be based in
Sydney. His job is to scour the news for anything of interest back home,
and if he read that in a WA newspaper he may well have filed a report
datelined Sydney but quoting WA police.

Also, the story is quite short, and probably only a fraction of what the
journalist wrote. So it's lacking in some detail which may have appeared
    in the original story.

    Evidence is not proof.

I can't find any record of it being reported in Australia, but again
    that's just evidence, not proof.

<shrug> I'm guessing the news correspondent for the Sarth Effrican service
is based in Sydney... you get a lot of that....

It's kinda telling that they named a newspaper after a heavy metal
which, if metabolised in sufficient quantities, causes brain damage...

  11. Where did it happen? Was it Perth as stated? Fairfax gives nothing away
so there's no finding it on the net.

Just because you declare something to be an out and out fabrication
    doesn't mean that it is.

They're not the ones who's integrity is in question here. You're the
    one who made the claim.
