Well I stuck my hand up and got the info from the MS society today. I
thought I'd pass on to the group the "what to bring" listed - there are
    some interesting bits:

    - full bottle of water (duh. I guess the Camel Back is OK)
    - spare helmet (I hope they arn't expecting me to need it myself!)
    - rack for 2nd bag (best place for ugly women....but I don't think that's
    what they mean)
    - the usual bits and pieces (like a bike etc).

So it looks very much like I'll be dragging a pillion around with me :)
Best bit is they have assigned me sector 7 which is the Royal National Park
between Waterfall and Stanwell Tops (woot!!). So if anyone from here has
volunteered and is on the same sector - see you on the 2nd of Nov!

    Cheers,

  2. I'm on the last shift between Heathcote rd and Waratah Park (finish). 12:40-4pm.
They didn't say anything to me about pillioning though.

They don't say it specifically but the need for a 2nd helmet etc seems to
suggest the need may arise. I guess stranded pushy riders etc might need a
lift - especially if their ride is kaput.

Pity we're at opposite ends of the course - still we may cross paths.

    diode is of the opinion:
I believe that's referring to pushbikes, not the route marshalls' bikes. At
    least, I'd sure hope not.

    It suggests.
You may be separated from your buke and you ride the train while someone
puts your bike onto at Semi trailer.
    Youre kidding.

If the ride is cancelled while in progress on the day Otford and Waterfall
railway stations will be used to transport riders on special trains out of
    the Royal National Park area.

Depending on conditions and numbers it may be necessary to transport riders
and bikes separately via semi-trailers out of the immediate area. Up to 800
riders at a time can travel in a single four-carriage train without their
bikes, but this number is considerably reduced with bikes so your
    co-operation is appreciated.

    Hi All..
You do not need to take a spare hemet.
You are not reqiured to take a pillion.
There will be back up vehs doing this if required.
Ive done it for the past 3 years with our club and is a lot of fun!!

You migh need to check you location as Waterfall is sector D. See below and
see you on the day .
    Rob Spitz

    Motorcycle Marshals

As a motorcycle marshal you need to read the following information to ensure
you are well prepared for your day on the 'Gong Ride!

What does a motorcycle marshal do?

Motorcycle Marshals are crucial links in the communications network on the
day. You will patrol your designated sector, relaying messages to your
sector manager about accidents, breakdowns or potential hazards. A key
aspect of your role is to encourage safe riding amongst participants.

Your Sector will have specific traffic conditions which must be observed by
cyclists and other vehicles (these conditions are included). Please attempt
to ensure that cyclists respect these also. Safety regulations must be
    upheld at all times.

    What you need to bring:

Be prepared for any kind of weather. Please remember to bring with you:

    Your Bike (ha ha!)

    Full water bottle

    Sunscreen

    Rain Jacket

    Meeting Time and Place:
Please meet your Sector Manager at the time and meeting point specified. Do
not go straight out onto the course, as your Sector Manager will be waiting
    at the meeting point.

    Meeting point: Waterfall Station

    Shift : 6.30 - 2pm

    Sector D

    Motorcycle Manager: Robert Spitz 0400 500 542

    Manager: Chris Henderson

    Your Volunteer Kit:
When you arrive at the meeting point, your Sector Manager will give you a
    volunteer kit containing:

    Volunteer t-shirt

    Red Volunteer cap

    Fluorescent vest

Communication procedure and contact names & numbers

    Event information

    'Gong "Ride Guide"

    Accident report sheet

    Message slip

'Volunteer' Sign and cable tie for your bike

Pick up your muffin or lunch from your sector manager

    If you see an accident.
    Stay calm.

Assess if the person involved can keep cycling or if they need medical
    assistance. (NB:

a bike repair will be passing you regularly who can look at any damaged
bikes). St John staff are located at each rest stop to treat any injuries,
and an ambulance can also be sent for if required.

If assistance is required, radio your sector manager and advise him/her of
    the situation. If

an ambulance is needed please call one but be sure to notify your manager
of this to avoid doubling up. Alternatively your Sector Manager can
transport cyclists to the nearest base where St John staff can give the
    cyclist(s) medical attention.

A route marshal may have seen an accident and filled out an accident slip.
    You may be

asked to deliver/radio this message to the sector manager.

    When does my shift finish?
Towards the end of your day there may be long gaps of time between when
cyclists pass you. Please do not leave until you can confirm that the
official last cyclist (who will be wearing a fluroscent green marshal vest)
has passed you. Phone your Sector Manager and check whether he/she would
like to dismiss the route marshals in your area.

It sounds a lot like their contingency plans for evacuation of participants in
case of a bushfire in the national park...

I'd say that I could make it out of the danger zone a lot quicker and easier

OK - fair nuff. So I can leave the ventura rack and spare Shoei at home and
rock up in the usual 'riding solo' gear then? (Full leathers, pillion seat
off - cowl on, camel back and a full tank).

As for the sector, I might have the designator screwed up (7/D/Twiglight
Zone??? *shrug*) but I have a fat fluro-green squiggly line from Waterfall
to Stanwell Tops. I'm also told to report for duty at 9am in the Waterfall
    train station car-park.

So see you Sunday eh Rob :)

Heheh - yeh I was talking to Matt Palmer yesterday and he's up at
"sparrow-o'clock" too. Now you know why I'm wrapped; I get all day to
survey the RNP (at low speed for a change), I still get a sleep-in (of
sorts) and I'm helping a worthy cause. What could be better? (sex and
    alcohol don't count).
