SYD: Toll charges

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Jul 12, 2007.

  1. It isn't really NSW as the tolls really only affect Sydney.... But if
you are paying toll on your bike, or might have to, and you want to do
something about it, then get into this. Snail or email or phone,
whatever works for you. But if you do it by phone, make sure you get
    a name.

    Zebee

    Via the MCC list.

NOW, is the time to go after toll roads - go after them all on TOLL RATE

(ignore the E-tag and technology issues for a moment)

Bridge, Tunnel M2 M7 M4 M5 Eastern Distrib Cross City

    Ask one question only

"WHY are TRUCKS charged a higher fee than cars?"

Bother them all and extract the most detailed answers you can. Argue with
them as if you were a transport manager - that trucks are the life blood
of the country, that cars receive the same economic benefit as a truck,
why is a tradies ute charged as a car when it's carrying the same weight
    as a small truck, etc

i.e. argue that trucks are paying too much.

I reckon the answers will be interesting and enlightening.

Get detailed answers, do not be fobbed off.

When we have received a good range of answers from ALL toll road
operators, we will serve their answers back to them as why they should
charge motorcycles one quarter the car toll rate.

Why should anyone care about something that's wrong but a government
rort means others are subsidising them?

And you do know that cashback is already under fire don't you....

Heard on WSFM ( amanda & jonesy )the Road Minister talking about bikes and
etags. He suggested that riders take them out of their pockets and hold them
up ..... it was pointed out that this was illegal as well as dangerous.

latest from the RTA (well at least one part of it, other parts seem to
disagree) is that if you have a tag and a Bridge pass, you can use the
tunnel, they'll match your plate, you give them the toll pass number
instead of the tag number, your tag isn't charged.

And this part of the RTA said "you don't need to have the tag on the
bike or rider". (I expect if you do then they'll charge it.)

The trick is, of course, that the RTA have the database. THey charge
other toll road operators for using it.

I don't know if you can do that trick if you don't have an RTA tag
    though.

    Still half arsed.

    1. Not I don't have the addresses - however as this is a DATA gathering
exercise I don't think it is as critical.

    2. WOuld not bother doing the M7 - doesn't matter what sort of vehicle
you have - it is a per km rate.

    and.

Which seems silly but there it is. As for common database, that
requires forethought and planning, so what do you think?

Re-reading it, I got the details wrong, here's the official from one
section of the RTA. Other sections may, of course, disagree. See
    forethought and planning above.

Note that the bridge pass is not tied to one bike for use on the
bridge, but is for use in the tunnel.

    ============
For unlimited travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour
Tunnel for a set fee, and travel on other toll roads in Australia, a
Motorcycle Periodic Pass can be used in conjunction with an RTA E-Toll
    Tag account.

A motorcycle periodic pass can be purchased as above plus an RTA
E-Toll tag account can be opened, with a single motorcycle
    registration nominated.

The advantage of this option is unlimited travel on the Sydney Harbour
Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel through E-Toll lanes for the $93
quarterly Motorcycle Periodic Pass fee, with the freedom to travel on
all other toll roads in Australia and have the toll amount charged to
your E-Toll account balance. The tag is not required to be on the bike
or rider. Travel on the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour
Tunnel will be debited to your E-Toll account by having the motorcycle
number plate nominated on your E-Toll account. Travel on toll roads
other than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Harbour Tunnel may
result in a toll notice being issued to the registered owner of the
vehicle. On occasions where a notice is received, you will need to
supply your tag details including your account number and tag number.
A manual adjustment will then be made from your E-Toll account for the
cost of the passing. You do not incur an additional fee, provided
there are funds in your E-Toll account.

Ok if you are a frequent user but what about the infrequent users ?

ffs, you should be able to purchase a motorcycle pass and have it
automatically debited without paying processing/admin fees

I think the novelty aspect of the internet has worn off. Most business
and government departments treat email as a legitimate form of
    communication nowadays.
