    Poor, but also naive...

Lives in fucking Erskineville and leaves the bike parked out on the fucking
street... might as well have given the thieves a hand lifting it into the
    van.

Tarted-up BabyBlade, bought a week ago for $4400, two grand below what they
go for in a shop... I'd almost put my rego papers on the previous owner
    having organised the theft.

And this as advice from a fellow CBR250 forum member:

"It might be worthwhile just calling some insurance places and asking them
if you take out insurance now, can the cover be back-dated to before it was
    stolen."

How do these people manage to get the key into the ignition in the morning?

When I asked a few bike shops about insurance they just assumed that I'd
already crashed the bike and wanted to make a bodgy claim. (And seemed
    pretty happy with the idea!)

You'd be surprised. Once the danger had passed during the Canberra fires, I
went into Woden looking for a shop that was still open and had power, so I
could get something to eat (a near-empty cupboard and no power make it hard
to eat at home!), and met a fellow rider who had been forced to leave his
home while the fires were still raging - the last time he'd seen it, he'd
been fighting the fires in his yard. Anyway, he asked if I had a mobile so
he could call his insurance company. I figured he just wanted to get started
on processing a claim, so I let him use it. Next thing I know, he's actually
organising insurance cover right then and there, making sure that it had
immediate effect - which they promised him it did. As far as he knew, his
house could well have been a smouldering ruin a couple of kilometres away,
and here he is with the insurance company giving him a lovely new policy no
problems at all! Good on ya, GIO!

  6. That story would be applicable if you knew how it all turned out. I'm
betting that once he'd actually lodged a claim and his situation went
further than the vacant-eyed call-centre staff, the first claim manager to
look at it would've quickly told him to swivel...

The thing with this stolen BabyBlade is that the bloke's already reported
the theft to the police, and this suggestion about taking out retrospective
insurance was made with the full knowledge of that. Basically, it envisaged
a phone call starting with, "Um, hi, my bike's been stolen. Can I take out
insurance on it, but backdate it to before the theft, so that I can still
make a claim and get paid out?"... what kind of stupid stick do you have to
get hit over the head with to conceive an idea like that?

That sound like just the usual "real world" stupid stick to me...

lol, you're probably right - and while not the same scenario, it does show
that the stupidity isn't always on the side of the wannabe claimant!

Mate.....for starts let me explain something
For the last week I have had that bike chained to a tree every night I
came back from work. Last night however I was out of luck because
every car space was taken and I couldn't get near a pole to chain it
    to.

I was in the fucking process of getting an alarm and insurance for the
    bike.

Today I had organized to take out comprehensive insurance and to get a
    bike alarm fitted.

Do you really think I am that naive to let my bike just sit there
unless I had no other choice?

If I could have wheeled it through the house into the back yard I
would have but it wouldn't fit through the door.

Now that we have that sorted can you please keep an eye out for the
    bike?

I am offering $1000 cash reward for the bike if its returned to me in
the condition what it was taken in

Uh, what stopped you getting insurance etc the day you bought the bike?
Don't mean to be a smart arse, getting a vehicle pinched sucks big time, but
you gotta use your head *before* the bad things happen.

All a bit harsh. I'd be feeling pretty shitty if someone flogged the Fizzer,
regardless of the circumstances. The bad guys are the fuckers who stole it,
not the bloke asking Sydneysiders to keep an eye out for it.

Hope you get it back mate.

Yep I got quoted $2000 a yr.. so I too don't have insurance (besides third
party property) but where I live and leave my bike it's highly doubtful any1
would ever steal it - more worried about leaving it on the street when I am
say out at a pub for the night or whatever

    i priced a 2000 ZX9 from QBE...
    5000 a year for comprehensive...
Suncorp was 620 a year for 3rd/Fire/Theft with Extras...ie, if someone else
hits me and has no insurance my vehicle is covered...im 20 with a previous
    fine...

Bottom line...shop around. That 5000 was the first quote i got.

You normally chain it to a pole, like a street sign or something? Are these
poles the type which have a base embedded in the concrete or asphalt and the
pole is secured by a bolt which anyone with a shifter can undo, lift out the
pole, remove the chain, drop the pole back in place?
    LOL that's funny.
You left the bike just sitting there... so I guess you are :)
Either your doorway was built by an awfully thin person or you've got the
    fattest 250 around :)
So if we find it and it is damaged we shouldn't bother telling you?
