SYD: Stay Upright July

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Jun 11, 2007.

  1. I'm pondering doing a refresher at Stay Upright on the Norge. I'm
quite happy with it, but some focused work on handling it and
    practicing braking would be good.

    Anyone else interested?

    http://www.stayupright.com.au/dates.htm

They aren't doing weekend ones anymore, presumably the track's booked
    or costs too much,

I have done the advanced, I wonder if the cornering and braking one is
the one I should do instead? Anyone done both and can say what the
main differences in the on-track time are?

Wouldn't mind some track time on the geezer glide - where do they do the
    courses these days?

Oran Park, check the link I gave which has dates and places.

I'm leaning towards cornering and braking myself, as I can play with
the low speed stuff myself. Right now I couldn't pass the MOST on it,
as I'd not manage the cones and I don't think I'd manage the U-turn.

Should look for a carpark (hard to find one on weekends that isn't
    full) and try.

    Save money...

Take a monday off, ride with me some place and just buy me beer.
    (I can't drink _that_ much for a lunch.) :)

Normally, the industrial area at Somersby is pretty good for that kind
    of thing at weekends.

    Not this weekend tho. :-(

And this teaches me cornering and braking how? :)

The track time (with ability to do emergency braking) is the
attractive bit, being able to practice the same corner and try
    different things.

Plus it should be better this time round - last time I was on the
Yellow Devil and some sod on a Thunderbird kept blasting past me on
the straights then going through the corners very slowly while running
majorly wide and as passing on the inside was forbidden...

Might take you up on it anyway if you think you can work out what I'm
doing wrong. (Presumably before the beer!)

I offered to save you money, but made no rash promises that you'd learn
    anything. ;-)
I admit it's fun to rush round in circles on a track.

Emergency braking practice, well, you _know_ the technique. Dunno if
there is anything funny about the Norge which you might only want to try
    it on a circuit.....anti-lock?

Similarly, for cornering, you _know_ the technique.

The South circuit at O.P. presents three main corners, the fourth, over
the brow of the hill, is a trick one, which is challenging, but only
because you have to turn in towards a point which you can't really see.
    I remember the T-bird. :-|

That's really the problem. I was there at that course with you.
You have, unless you've forgotten, learnt the techniques, both at
Amaroo, with SU and E.C. with superbike school.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't normally try and talk anyone out of doing
any kind of riders training, but, in this particular case, I really
dunno if it would work for you.
    Offer is there.

What do you feel that you aren't doing right, anyway?

Yes, the ability to do things without having to worry about anyone
    else is the big one.
I do, I would like to be better at it. THere's a difference between
knowing a theory and being able to do it right at all times. If it
were easy we'd all be Rossi eh?
You might be right. Except for the braking I might be better to spend
the money on a track day, except my insurance covers me for training,
not for that. And a bike like the Norge, this is important!
I'm not sure. I suspect it's what I was whinging Superbike school
were not teaching, which is how to work out where to start the turn
in. Reading the road. Admittedly I don't recall S.U. talking about
    that much either.

Yup, although there is always the chance of another T-bird type.
Even Rossi gets it wrong sometimes.
Yup! I forgot about that aspect... sorry.
Reading the road, or learning a track?

SU probably teach how to work out a corner better than superbike school.

Quite a while back now, I followed you and you were managing to
percolate along very effectively, on one of the elderly Guzzis, so, in
the true spirit of aus.motorcycles, I'll jump to a wild guess with no
evidence whatsoever, and tell you what you're doing wrong. ;-)

The Norge goes faster than the old ones, so you are rushing upto corners
    quicker.

Typically, when you rush up quicker, you'll try and turn in earlier.

Turning in too early will then often result in running wide on exit, or
having an on-off-on business with the throttle mid corner.

Neither of these inspire confidence, so you start turning into the next
    corner earlier.... etc.

How many years ago was that?

I remember doing a SU course at Amaroo with you present. I do remember some
tosser on a big bike getting on the way of my CBR250R :)

Could be, the Devil's been in Adelaide for some years now. And that
course was before my big crash.

I think it was exactly 10 years ago.

    Amaroo closed in 98.
The course in question was a few months before the closure.
Some weeks/months after the course there was also a ride day (possibly
the last one to be held at Amaroo) where there was an aus.moto presence.
