SYD: booked on harbour bridge?

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Zebee Johnstone, Aug 23, 2006.

  1. Anyone booked this morning coming off the Harbour Bridge to York
Street please email Guy Stanford <>

This is the 2004 process all over again.

see website and download the letter.

    Fight the fine.

Apparently several dozen riders were booked $179 for disobeying the
sign that was supposed to be removed in 2004.

Once again, riders singled out as a result of administrative failure
and no co-ordination. What was the point of this exercise by Police?
Whatever it was, it hasn't earned them any respect.

I could be mistaken, but I think the sign that was a problem in 04 has
been updated to permit motorcycles. However, the sign at the cahill
epressway exit to york st. (the exit level with the toll booths) has
been updated to permit only taxis and buses during am and pm peak.
Unfortunately, if I'm correct, the inconsistency which created the
problems in 04 no longer applies as the point at which motorcycles are
excluded offers an alternative route which the 04 sign didn't.

If I'm correct, the fine would not be for entering york st. which is
legal, but for exiting the cahill expressway. The solution would be to
use the center lanes of the bridge and pay your toll at the south end
instead of using the 2 extreme left lanes and paying your toll at the
north end. Using this route would avoid any signage excluding
    motorcycles.

I'm working from a notoriously bad memory, however, so I'll double
    check the signage tomorrow.

    It is still bloody stoooopid.

Cahill Expressway is a 24 Hour Bus Lane (ie bikes and taxis allowed).

The exit to York street now excludes 1 category and you have a split second
to take this into account before either sweeping around to the left and
across Circular Quay or take the exit.

MCC of NSW should lobby for some CONSISTENCY in the traffic flow/regime
    across the bridge.

So we now have to deal with yet another category:

    BUS ONLY lanes

    BUS LANES

bus and taxi lanes (signage only)

No argument. However, in 04, the RTA and police got fucked by the
motorcycling community. You don't seriously expect powerful people to
just let that sort of thing slide do you? Stupid or not, it's payback
and is internally consistent, which the 04 signage was not, so I doubt
    it's going to get changed.

There also appears to (still) be a discrepancy on the Southern entry too.

There's a yellow sign with a BUS symbol and a No Entry Buses taxis hire cars
excepted for 630am-930am. I think it's the Clarence Street onramp.

This sounds like the signs that should have been removed in 2004 (ref MCC
    website, Minister's letter to Chesterfield-Evans ).

I'll grab a photo later this morning.

    Related:-

    Southern side.

The Clarence St entrance to the Bridge is a 24 hour bus lane. (prominent
    white sign on overpass)

    (ie. mbikes permitted).

Upon commiting to this lane one then is confronted by a smaller yellow sign
stating <Bus symbol>, taxis and hire cars (no mention of mbikes).

So signage is indeed still stuffed and still misleading.
