The trauma's blocked it out. It was by a border crossing, but I can't
remember on which road or whether it was crossing into Italy or Austria.

I joined the Hog route from Dagmersellen but took a parallel pass along the
Panoramastrasse via Fluhli to get to Giswil.

which is where you eventually overtook me, having taken a shorter route, at
    the Co-op petrol station.
It does, yes. The view I liked was on the downslope of the Grimsel where
you could look up to the Fluela in front of you. That's one to ride next
time I'm in the area, together with the Nufenen & St Gotthard.

Between Zernez & the Austrian border at Nauders. For me the best road of
the trip, from the northern end of Lake Como via St Moritz to Landeck in
    Austria.

    Well, not officially, anyway.
I saw a camera on the central reservation near Basel. Quite sure it went
    off too.

My only interest in the scenery was not ending up part of it.

I'd quite like to do it again in the car so I can look around once in a
    while.

Hmm. I've booked Reims for tomorrow night but can cancel. I do need to make
progress - is it just as quick? The London - Reims leg was just going to be a
mostly dull but fast blat, to get into the swing of things.

Also, because my dealers are cunts, I'm going to leave later than planned. So
I don't think it's going to happen this time but thanks for the tip.

As you are going to be running late I would go with the prebooked hotel
and ensure it is one where you can check in late e.g. Ibis. Where did
    you book?

The Be-Lux-DE route is about the same distance. You'll get a tank of
cheap petrol in Lux. The route is slightly more complex as you have to
get used to the different road signs and look for more junctions.

Go to www.viamichelin.com if you want to compare toll costs. I'm
guessing, but I think Calais to Basel is about 25 euros if you go A26/A4
    via Metz

    Kinda.

It was the border post at Martina - Nauders was up the hill, where you
came from. We crossed into Austria a couple of miles down the road
through a steep valley. Anyway, next to the border post was a tourist
tat shop with a couple of petrol pumps so we figured we might as well
fill up while it was cheap. Second mistake.

What we didn't know was that we'd passed an unmarked car about a mile
    earlier. First mistake.

First we knew of the trouble was a uniformed chap walking over from the
border post while we were filling up.

    "You guys are English yeah?"
    "Er, yeah"
"OK, when you've filled up, don't go anywhere, come over there to that
building. We need to have a little chat and sort a few things out"

Cue furrowed brows all round as soon as he'd turned to walk away, as we
try to work out wtf we might have done. Or, rather, what we've been
caught doing, because by that point the riding had gone through
exuberant and into outright pisstaking and we'd pretty much torn up the
Swiss highway code. And set fire to it. And then taken a shit on the
    ashes.

It was a stunning section - absolutely rocked right up to the point we
were nicked - and was the only bit of road in Switzerland where the
bikes generally seemed to be going for it big time. Especially alongside
the lakes near St Moritz. I knew we'd gone a bit overboard when I looked
at my speedo as we left St M (ie. when we went from 50kph urban to 80kph
national) and I was already doing 250kph. Silly. Very silly indeed.

I'd be fucking wary of doing that again though. Even by my standards, we
    were asking for trouble.

That was on the way down, when I was leading the way and was adamant
that I wasn't going to do more than 20kph over the limit - the point
where it goes from fixed penalties to income-related fines and a general
    bumraping.

The criminal stuff was the day after... see other post.

None of the lakes are unpleasant, so stopping somewhere near one for a
day or two will be a good option.

You weren't looking for the right shaped box. The motorways are
stuffed full of them. The stretch between Geneva and Lausanne, for
instance, has at least six that I can tremember.

    Here's a starter for ten. http://www.blitzer.de/#id:747847
