As Wessie suggested, I'm taking some time to explore the Alps on my way to Greece. e.g. 21st London - Reims 22nd Reims - UST 23rd UST - UST (via fun roads) 24th UST - Venice So, er, where in Switzerland? I think Lucerne or Bern look like decent bases for exploring, or shall I go the whole hog and base myself in Interlaken or Meiringen? I think I should stay in a single UST as it will enable me to ride around during the day without luggage. [1] UST = Unknown Swiss Town -- TD 2000 GSX1300RX (red and black) Missing: SOB, Unreliable Italian exotica, cage - What with the Internet, it doesn't take long to feel like one is an - expert on any subject these days.
stayed in a village purporting to be the birthplace of William Tell, came over some massive pass from Austria. Watch out for little old ladies in cafes selling rosti and local cheese, check the prices first!
I've just been around the area. A most fantastic journey is to skirt Interlaken and go over the Grimsell then Simplon passes. It's truly amazing. This will bring you down to the head of Lake Maggiore in Italy. Ride down the lake to the Autostrade and Venice is an easy destination. You don't need to touch a single Swiss toll road. You could stay in Interlaken, plenty choice, from Balmers Herberage to the Victoria. I love both. Or depending where you cross stay here www.kreuz-kappel.ch/englisch.htm very well run and immaculate which is on a good non toll cross country route
I didn't find any tedious spots. You were probably going too slow. I put a few waypoints in to keep it interesting and away from tolls. Doing it in a Cabriolet, rather than full bore on a bike or in a Porker, I saw and appreciated more of the country than in all previous trips. It took a bit longer though. One could really appreciate the smell of hot brakes coming down from Simplon summit.
If you want to smell hot brakes, do this route while making good progress: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&s...,10.636139&sspn=0.26083,0.479279&ie=UTF8&z=11
Ah! That makes much more sense than Unresolved Sexual Tension. I might have to go back and re-read some threads.
The endless 50/30 limit through the valley? If you enjoyed that, maybe you should consider buying a Harley.
Of course, it is an 'unofficial' list in that the membership has never actually been ... well ... listed as such. Champ is the nominal recorder though, or Keeper of the List - which makes him KotLUST but he never admits to it willingly, although the acronym is quite grinworthy and your interpretation of it makes it even more so.
This was roughly th route I took http://tinyurl.com/3ahr57y Yeah there is that valley after the Grimsel Pass but it's very scenic and my brakes cooled down. I stopped there for lunch. To the OP, you mention Reims, that would suggest French toll roads. Forget it. The Burnt route is far cheaper and just as efficacious. http://tinyurl.com/2w4lm2j **** the French and their Plods and huge Peage tolls Then from Stresa to Venice there is a 220mi toll route or a 260mi free route It will be a great journey! I'm thinking of flying back over to Geneva and hiring a car to go play again.
It's amazingly scenic and I loved the railway junction where you see the cars loaded up to head through the Simplon tunnel He is yet young. He will grow into that litre bike eventually.
Exactly the same as ours from Giswil onwards. Probably a more pleasant journey trundling along in a comfy car than perched on a sportsbike that just wants to do a ton plus everywhere.
The junction by the station in Brig-Glis was a nightmare - I was too busy trying to find the way (even with a satnav) to notice the surroundings. Packer and I almost ended up going down into the motorail terminal, as did a few cars. Lots of reversing, paddling backwards and three point turns before we found the right way up the mountain. I'd love to do it again but I'm naturally a bit wary about riding with enthusiasm in the Swiss Alps again.
Did you problems not arise on the motorways? I didn't see a single Plod trap or camera in my by road journey across CH.
No wonder you guys enjoyed it so much, didn't realise that was your route. It plain fucking rocks. I was stopping pretty regularly at all the scenic spots, for the first time ever.
