if by some misfortune of life you are reduced to watching bbc parliament,
it would be as well not to advertise the fact.

Why? It's purely good background noise whilst I'm working at home -
music tends to detract me from working a bit too much, and BBC news
    loops after a while.

if all you're after is background noise then nickelodeon works well and is
    less infantile.

To drown out the sound of the ringing phone.

I find it far easier to work with some background noise, than just the
whir of a PC fan. YMMV.

My phone hasn't been ringing a lot lately as everyone seems to have
moved over to using our internal instant messaging system that we're
all expected to run. The PC going *bing* every few minutes grates a
    tad though.

Isn't that what Blaster Bates and CD players in PC's are for?

*Truly* hilarious in person. Many, many funny tales involving explosives. He
used to do his stand-up routine at my parents' pub in Macclesfield back in
    the early '70s. Great show.

Maybe my hearing is better than yours, but yes, laptop hard drives
make a high pitched whir and cpu cooling fans a whoosh sound. The
desktop PC similar, mostly from the CPU cooler and case fans not loud
    but certainly not inaudible.

heh. I'd rather try scratching out my eyes with a saw blade in an
angle grinder than watch that bunch of schoolchildren bawling at each
    other in the commons.

The house of Lords is worse. I wonder if anyone has died in there and
    no-one actually noticed .. ?

I've been to a few dinners where he did the after dinner speaking. Fucking
good bloke with a superb sense of humour. I don't know how he survived the
    demolition work though.
