milan ritonja is of the opinion:
Pose value: 3/10 (7/10 in the 250-only stakes)

Common, so there'll be plenty of parts. Most second hand ones will have
been thrashed to within an inch of their lives. Just your average little
250 sports-alike, really. Never heard of them being anything spectacular in
    any department.

    polly right there
    that there is
yes....but boy are they are strong, mines [1] done 60k and doesnt burn
a drop of oil and going very strong and it has have the live hell
beaten out of it, never heard of any blowing a engine
    except for the boot :)

below average fuel range is the worst point

check our the CBR250, VTR250 or Spada, ZZR250, GPX250 and the Across,
the one you like and get at a good price will be the best for you, all
    good learner bikes

    Here are a few points...

    - As has already been said - range could be an issue.

    - Also, if you're planning to use it to get your licence, make sure you
practice hard on the u-turn and cone-weave. I've heard that its biggish
turning circle has contributed to many failing the Ps test.

    - Check out http://www.hyp4r.com/mct/across/across.htm for more info.

    - Finally, a Blackbird will most certainly get you there faster. Note:
"there" could mean "destination" or "cemetery" - that bit is up to you. :)

    You're welcome.

  6. Good little bikes.

It seems their most popular feature is the "glove box" - the bit
that _looks_ like the fuel tank is actually a storage compartment
    - the fuel lives under the seat, your Maccas takeout goes in the
    glovebox...

This, unfortunately, also causes in their least popular feature -
poor fuel tank range, I hear stories of people only getting
160-180km out of a tank - not too much of a problem round town,
but out in the country, thats a fair bit less than lots of other
bikes, so if you're riding in a group everybody else will
complain about how you always need to stop for fuel :) On a more
serious note, you need to plan your routes a bit more carefully
if you ever go on long remote trips, there are lots of places in
outback Australia where servos are futher apart than that...

Other comments - they're fully faired, so even small "dropped it
in the driveway" type accidents will either cost you a fair bit
to fix, or reduce the resale value of the bike (which can be
turned into an upside, it means there's likely to be one for sale
with scratched up fairings, so you can talk them down on price).
People will recommend a vtr250/bandit250/hornet250/Spada instead
because they are all unfaired... If you're not particularly
attracted to the faired bike look, consider one of them instead...

They are probably the slowest of the 4 cylinder 250s, if thats a
problem for you... Still faster than 99% of cars tho, and that
probably makes it an arguably better learner bike that say a
    babyblade...

Good stuff, just about impossible to kill, 7000rpm idle is normal :)),
they can take an unbelievable amount of punishment (see Mick_G and Marty_H,
    hehe)
Also have a look at the ZZR250, bit rough at idle, but then keeps going
    forever, just like the Across.
    cheers

  14. Yeah, he'd settle for a GPX, but he _really_ wants a Spada ;-)

  15. Dunno, but I'm pretty certain you'll find that any of the
    CBR250RR, FZR250, and ZX2R (or ZXR250) quite comfortably out
power an Across, and I wouldn't be surprised to find both the
Bandit 250 and the Hornet 250 do as well...

Yeah, these V-engines have twice as many cam sprocket
    retaining bolts :)

  18. If you have to stroke your own ego by out accellerating someone at the
lights than I pity the fool. Once rode with a group of 2fiddys, myself on
the across and the others being a range of cbrrrrr's, vtr and a bandit. The
dicks on the cbr's were loving the ride up to the mountains, kicking my ass
at every traffic light gp. Once we hit the twisties I had my choice of
taking them on either the inside or outside of every corner. You can guess
what happened whenever we got to a straight. And they still thought they
were the shit. They still think I was laughing with them as well.[/QUOTE]

Hey, no need to tell me, I ride a Spada - even less power than an
Across (claims max of 25kW for the Spada, 33kW for the Across).

I _did_ out-drag Josh's Across down the straight at Wakefield
PArk tho, but that was due to cornerspeed in turn 11 rather than
    horsepower...

There's not much more satisfying than going round bigger bikes on
the outside in turn 1 at the creek, or getting blown away by them
down the straight, then pasing them again between turns 3 and 7
    :)
Yep, I agree... (I thought I made that clear in my original
    post...)
    What are you on now?

I met so many people who came up to me when I got the Spada and
said "Cool, A Spada, I used to have one of those, I wish I still
had it" that I Kept it when I got the Ducati :)

Actually, I think that your XLV750 and my VT500E both have the same
    number as a CBR1000F (2 cams, 4 bolts), right?
Nah, I'm feeling a little more mellow today. :-D

I'm not surprised. After riding 600 km on an M750 Ducati on GP weekend I can
confirm that they might almost be as much fun as a Spada (and maybe even
develop as much power as the Spada too).
