    Hi Steve,

Well its up to you how much you use the glove box. I think from memory (but
don't quote me) I wasn't getting much better than 180-200 km from a tank.
But plenty of sportsbikes are no better ...

what sort of riding do you do ???
I will be commuting to work, which is about 30mins away, mostly open road.

This particular one does have a rack, but i dont think it comes with a bag.

I have to admitt this feature is a big plus to me and is probably the main
feature that draws me to the Across. Just wondering though, how hot does it
get in there while riding. Would it be safe to carry something like a DVD in
    there or would it melt.

    Hi Steve,
I often go to the video shop and rent a DVD after work, so i was thinking
that it would be great for little things like that, instead of carrying a
bag around all day just to put a DVD in. But i am worried that it would get
too hot in their for carrying things like that.

Its hardly an important feature to look for in a bike, but sometimes its the
    little things that count. :)

All i can really say is that they have looked after me with the XT. They
recommended it to me when i told them my needs (road legal farm bike), even
though they could have tried to sell me a more expensive bike. And so far it
has been great. They also give me a discount on any gear i buy. I know that
at the end of the day, its their job to make as much money as possible, but
like i said they have looked after me so far.

BTW, this particular dealer is also the rider training centre in my town.

    But...my advice is don't buy from a dealer..........The Across you're
talking about is too expensive I reckon.

Yeah ive been checking out other sources (trading post, ebay etc) and im
starting to think the same thing. There is currently an Across on ebay that
looks pretty good (as far as you can tell from mere pics) and it is only
    $1500.

    Anyway thanks Nick

I'd like to thank everyone for your help. I have decided i will NOT be
buying the bike i mentioned. The Across will still probably be #1 on my
shopping list, but i certainly havent ruled out any other models as of yet.
Other than the GPZ900, the Across is the only faired bike ive sat on, heh.

Also, i think ill stay away from dealerships, except for having a sit on the
bikes to see if they are comfy.

And I just thought of something
Yep i know all about LAMS (and the GPZ900), im going to stick with a 250
though because it will be significantly cheaper to register/insure.

after registering a 250 not so long ago I found that its not a great deal
    cheaper
than a bigger bike bout $100 or so which when the 250 was $400 not a huge
    amount
versus ACT where its only $165 to rego a 250 , ah the joys of living in NSW

insurance, get an old bike there is plenty on the lams that you will find
    for under $2K
and get 3rd party on it , as you can fix most stuff unless you really chuck
    it away
and beside by the time you pay insurance , excess and lose NCB its hardly
worth making a claim a lot of the time, which you will be wanting NCB when
    you
    want that expensive new bike

and depending on your insurance age/rating you could be very surprised at
    what
you could get full comp for
I.em. if its good then not a great deal more than 3rd party

I would suggest having a look at the Lams and heading into NRMA say with a
    few
options and give some hypotheticals and get some prices and you will
know what you can get, NRMA isn't the cheapest insurer but just to get an
    idea of things

also thing to remember I found with NRMA if you took out full comp insurance
    they would
give $100 off the greenslip so then full comp can be taken out for not a
    whole lot more
than what 3rd party would have cost you , some other insurers may do the
    same

    Whats wrong with a DT175?

Probably nothing, except i think its a 2 stroke and i wanted a 4 stroke.
What i meant was they probably could have tried to sell me one of their
brand spanking new Ag bikes or something like a TTR250, which they have
plenty of in stock. But they would not have really suited my needs. Instead
they showed me a second hand `98 XT which has been perfect for my needs so
far, but once i get my L's i'd really like to ride to work on a road bike
and leave the dirt bike in the shed.

  18. Its your money, I'd got the second hand DT and put the rest of the money
towards a haircut and fancy suit for pulling birds.....
