Why bother with an SUV that will lose heaps over the usual 4 year period .
My "SUV" is a HiLux SR5 twin cab diesel with a canopy, I can sling all the
dirty shit including dogs in the back that can be washed out with a hose if
need be and still keep my cabin space as clean as the day it was delivered.
It does around 11km / lt of the dirty fuel during most types and speeds
    including some city type driving.

"Fuckin shitheap" was suggested by Biggus in this very post above.

I used to be able to pick the difference between an EJ and EH ute from 100
yards, now I can't tell the difference between a Commodore and a Falcon
without reading the labels. Are they really different or is just the labels?

"Four wheel drive" has always been the "traditional(1)" aussie term
for the truck like passenger vehicles which drive all wheels often
    abbreviated to 4WD.

And to answer the obvious next question the answer is "cars"... oh ?
That's not clear ? I assume the next question will be "yeah but what
about things like a Forester or a WRX (etc) ? They're cars, we don't
differentiate between FWD and RWD cars so there's no reason that we
should have a special name for AWD cars. But if you really must "All
wheel drive" AWD will do nicely.

errm that's because "4 by 4" **IS** an Americanism !! Although most
Aussies speak Seppo fairly well and will understand you :)

"Four wheel drive" isn't the same phrase as "4 by 4" although I think
    they mean the same thing.
yeah well, any time I've said the above def'n someone always has to
say "but yeah but what about <insert AWD car model here>"

Anyways, I've never noticed anyone not getting the point when I call
'em 4WD's and it avoids an unneccessary Seppoism

Prolly - we're early adopters of Seppoisms.
<shrug> It's still not general usage outside those circles though,
whereas 4 wheel drive is.In fact I think SUV is more common than 4 by
    4
