I'm thinking of putting some SM wheels for the KTM.
However the ones I've seen are fucking expensive. I thought it was just
a case of getting some 17 inch wheels, that obviously isn't so. Or can
you buy some wheels from say a CBR600 and getting spacers for them?

At the moment I have a set of Suzuki GS500 17" wheels waiting to be fitted
on a Honda XR600. Seen that before in Barcelona on another XR, it works. But
this is just for learning, heavy supermotard use of a bike (including jumps,
etc) requires the other type of wheels. It also requires a lighter bike,
    certainly, like yours.

Price for a kit of supermotard wheels here is some 900 euros.

Ahhh, now it makes sense. I want to race on it (naturaly) so the wire
wheels would be better I suppose.
    About the same here then.

The advice of using wire wheels was kindly given by the guys of a Spanish
    forum of supermotard racers.

The cheapest option's probably to buy some used standard wheels
(assuming you want to keep the current ones for off-roading), take an
angle grinder to the spokes, sell the rims, then send the hubs to
Central Wheel to be laced up with some nice wide 17" rims. You won't
have to muck around with changing spacers, calliper mounts, cush drives
etc when you switch wheels then.

If you want to spend a bit more, you could get some Talon hubs rather
than used standard ones, & some nice Excel rims if you really want to
    splash out.

Spokes allow the wheel to deform, which when you're riding off-road is
what you want them to do. It's either that or they collapse, which you
    don't want
