Summer Riding Gear

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Getting Slower & Slower !, Dec 9, 2003.

  1. Today I did 400 Km on my Honda ST 1300, and cooked, with Brisbane summer
heat and high humidity. Having done countless miles on sports' and
sportstourer bikes, wearing 2 piece leathers over many years, I am
considering the purchase of 'draggin jeans' type, pants and jacket set.
I am wondering how long these would last, as normal jeans, used at home, hit
the rag bag after about a year; with say 10 hours a week end riding, my
normal ration, how long would they last ?(many years? He hopes !)
I don't want to waste $500, like on the Force Synthetic set, that are so
hot, I only use them to ride to Stanthorpe, on the coldest day of the year,
    one day a year.
They are like wearing a plastic rain suit,in the sun, even with the liner
    taken out.
Anyone have a comment about these Kevlar clothes, or had an 'off' in them ?

    Rob.

How come you ride only 10 hours on weekends?

  3. Kimbo,
Because I am getting Slower and Slower out of bed in the morning, staying up
all night reading posts in Aus. Motorcycles from knowledgeable people, like
    you.

It just seemed unusual that someone would restrict their riding to
    weekend touring only. Just curious.

    ?

I've been wearing a pair of draggin jeans for 2 years now, probably
averaging 10 hrs per week. In that time they've even been washed! Today
they still look like new and have always been comfortable, far more so than
the leather suit in the heat. Nothing to tell in terms of a slide in them,
and I'm hoping that I'll not ever be in a position to give such a report.
However, I'm told they will save your skin from bitumen - though very little
will save you from a barrier or *gulp* gutter impact.

For the top half, we have the BMW Airflow jackets - brilliant is an
understatement. Like wearing a t-shirt but with armour and full slide
protection - including a back protector in the back of the jacket. They
were expensive, and yes, wearing it makes you look a little like a Pet Shop
Boy, but for comfort - unbeatable. I'm told Rivet have a similar jacket out
now though - about 1/2 the price but not as funky... :)

Anyway, have fun and for me the cost of the new gear is easily justified -
    comfort = safety!

Well, I've been wearing a pair of draggin jeans to work each week day for 12
months. They get washed once a week, and still seem quite new.

After countless rides trying to keep up with Mr Ello, I realised it wasn't
my bike / lack of experience / chicken shit attitude towards falling off and
not risking that extra 10KM + around the next corner, but my riding gear.

After poking and prodding his nice BMW jacket, I decided I must have one...
but alas the wife stepped in and said "hell No I want a new Kitchen". So I
bought the cheaper Rivet AirStream Jacket. Absolutely love it. The copy of
the BMW model and I think looks damn fine ( But anything looks fine on me in
    the dark ).

I also have a pair of the Draggin Jeans Blue Chino pants. I was wearing
them at work all year but they have faded and I no longer wear them in the
office. Only lasted 8-12 months before they were not acceptable. I wasn't
pleased with this fading, even though I ( the missus ) followed all the
washing instructions. They are still fine pants and wear them on rides.

    Hi,

After the 8000km ride to WA and back, I can really recommend the MotoDry
jackets. Armoured, cool, and reasonably waterproof[1].

    Cheers

    1. They managed 10km in a thunderstorm with only a few trickles. In
serious rain I would have reverted to the Rivet Freeway.

Washed once a week? Geezus, you people. Everyone knows jeans
wash themselves on the bedroom floor ...

Hmmm, I've got a pair of those and have been wearing them for 9 months
without a hint of fading. Maybe it's worth dropping Draggin Jeans an email
    to ask about it.

Haven't yet entered into Holy Matromony yet have you Sharks old boy... I
have learnt (the hard way) that clothes must go into a big plastic bin, and
if I do that, they magically reappear in my wardrobe a day or so later.

Still having a laundry fairy is quite a nice thing, as you get a magic
undies drawer that always has clean undies and socks in it.

    Heeey matey,

Big fella, for normal people the Rivet jacket is a much more normal and
groovy looking garment than mine... But for me - just gotta look like a Pet
Shop Boy (and I had no choice)! :) How good are the summer jackets though
eh? Always a bummer when the day starts cold early but gets damned hot
during the day. However, no need to squid with the airflow jackets!
    Whooo-hooo!! :)
You walk around the office without pants on? No wonder you've just been
    made partner.

    Boy oh boy!

  19. Yeah - I've had a Rivet vented jacket for 6-7 years now. Great thing,
    highly recommended.
