summer breaks (possibly ping Muddycat)

If we were to decide to fly to LA and drive to Laguna Seca is there
much to do on the way?

We're considering doing a quick trip over leaving the UK on the Tuesday
and flying back the following Tuesday so there's not much time to do
any major sight seeing trips. The idea is to go to Chimay on the
Thursday evening (as normal), ride home on the Monday, pack and fly out
the next day and probably spend the Saturday & Sunday at the MGP before
    heading back to LA.

I doubt if we'll actually go because of the cost and the limited time
available but it's something we're considering while we look at options
for a summer break. Another option is to try and tie in an IHRO round
with a MGP one but the only realistic dates are to go to Brno for the
Czech GP then head back to Gedinne for the classic races but Brno is a
2 day ride and I need to limit my time away. The good thing about going
to Brno is that I know a decent place to stop halfway and the ride back
to Belgium could easily be done via Austria to make it entertaining.

    Anyone got any other suggestions?

San Marino in Sept. - I'm going to arrive in France on Thurs 1st Sept[1]
and have a provisional booking at Bruce's on Fri 2nd Sept. Only 7.5 hours
to San Marino from there[2]. Probably stop at Reims or Verdun on the Thurs
evening. You could take a more sedate route back via Dolomites, Austria and
    unrestricted German autobahn past Stuttgart.

PS I'm not heading to San Marino after Bruce's but through the Massif to
    Jen's.

San Marino's a possibility but I'd like to do one of the classic rounds
hence trying to link one with a MGP round.

That's on my list too. Tentative plan is to do the F1 at Spa the weekend
before, then drive down to Italy and spend a week somewhere near Misano.

That'll be our main holiday though - scrapping plans for the TT leaves
me with a week to throw at another road trip before or after
    Glastonbury.

    <checks dates>

seems Gedinne has been brought forward a week this year. Last couple of
years it was the last weekend in Aug.

  7. I already responded to the lady of the house, but for the benefit of
others, LA is the wrong end of California for Laguna Seca. SF or San
    Jose would be better (closer).

That said, the scenic route from LA to Monterey is worth doing just for
the scenery. You can break the journey with stops at beaches, Hirst
Castle and Monterey Bay Aquarium is a must.

Taking the 'quick route' between LA and the north is pretty boring
    straight line highway.

I didn't bother looking at last years dates but I'll take your word on
that one. I'd sooner there'd been a closer MGP round the week before
Gedinne because it's a 750 mile ride to Brno but done over two days
with a hotel stop halfway it's not too bad. We've done Randersacker a
number of times going to the Elefant and it's an easy day without going
mad plus the hotel is a nice spot to stop.

Like I said, we're just looking at options and Adie doesn't like doing
two long days in a row on the bikes so I doubt if we'll be doing Brno.

Highway 1 up the coast, mainly. That is a pretty spectacular drive. That
said, if you want to do anything like that involving Laguna Seca, book
the accommodation about six months ago...

Laguna Seca is a spectacular track and I would think it's definitely
worth going to - we're definitely going there again for the classic
    (car) racing in August.
Going up Hwy 1 should be doable - I'd kip in LA Tuesday night and make
it a two-day trip. Going back on Sunday/Monday is going to be a trip
down 101 or I-5, the latter being a very good definition of boredom.

Flying to SF would give you better starting point and you could make a
couple of shorter side trips instead of two long ones.

San Marino to Milan is one dead straight motorway and it's as boring as

It's hardly that far, especially if you take 101.

Shirley Soldin, who used to be one of the Nazty Gurrlz, lives a
bit north of Santa Cruz, on the coast road down to LS. When I stayed
with her and Jacqueline Kowtko we visited Santa Cruz Uni, which has the
unusual mascot of a banana slug.

Surfing off the coast, of course, if that's your sport.

  14. Ride to Ziri in Slovenia for a rally. Much fun, well much fun if you
    don't break your leg.

  15. LA to SanFrancisco is a nice drive if you take a couple of days and take
the coast road. Lots of interesting little towns on the way. Fantastic
    scenery.

Others have pointed out some of the good spots. I liked Big Sur.

    You could also hire Harleys...

Err yes, that particular coast road happens to be otherwise know as
    Highway 1...
Big Sur is cool, nice place to stop for food, just a little
    expensive...

The ride/drive up the PCH would be worth the trip alone. lots of super
scenery along the way. I don't know about doing stuff in the southern
bit, I live up north. DNC would be a better source.
