As word of the rather tasty NSR in the shed seems to be spreading, we thought it prudent to install an alarm system to the shed to safeguard it, and it's contents. Having carried out the installation today, I thought it only fair to display suitable warning signage. Problem is appropriate wording. I have drafted such a sign, but SWMBO is not too keen on the wording, which is thus: Polite Notice ATTENTION THIEVING PIKEY SCUM Yes, that means YOU asshole The legal owners of the contents of this shed that you are currently thinking about breaking into have taken steps to safeguard their hard worked for property This shed and it's contents are protected by a state of the art intruder alarm system. You are seriously advised to take your nasty, thieving hands elsewhere, whilst they are still attached to your arms. Thankyou. I thought this was to the point and polite, SWMBO thinks it too strong. Anyone like to suggest some alternative wording. -- Dan L (Oldbloke) My bike 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr M'boy's current bike 1990 Suzuki TS50X (Heavily fortified) M'boys NEW bike 2003 Honda NSR125R BOTAFOT #140, DIAABTCOD #26
IMO you are simply setting a target for the thieves to beat. The more you rant on on a notice the more they will take notice and then try and nick the bike(s). I know you dislike thieves and would like to see them strung up but there's no need to let them know they can drive *you* mad as well as nick something they might like Why don't you just opt for the word "Alarmed" and leave it at that? My preference would be to say nothing - you're just attracting undesirable attention. Why do you think the police suggest that one of the simplest deterrents is simply to cover a bike with a bike dull grey bike cover? No one takes any notice of them.
Hmm, I was aiming to provide a statement of fact, understandable by even the lowest knuckle dragging scrote. The signage I have in mind would be quite small, about the size of an index card. It would not be readable until up close, the theory being anyone that close to the shed door has bad intentions in mind. Good point. I certainly don't want to draw attention to the fact that there is something in the shed worth having, but fear that if I do not make clear what will happen if unlawful entry is attempted, then the stupid twats will break in regardless, and whilst they may not be able to remove thye bikes, I will have the hassle of repairing the shed to deal with. I don't think that "alarmed" would register with the lower class of thieving twat I have so far encountered (too technical a word on it's own for their limited linguistic skillset), and unfortunately I do not need to broadcast the fact that there is (at least one) nickable bike in the shed, the local jungle drums will already be broadcasting that one. Anyway, thanks for a balanced and well reasoned POV (as usual) -- Dan L (Oldbloke) My bike 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr M'boy's current bike 1990 Suzuki TS50X (Heavily fortified) M'boys NEW bike 2003 Honda NSR125R BOTAFOT #140, DIAABTCOD #26

I need a return to wild and wacky (as approved by Ben Blaney). out of curiosity why did you ask for advice when you are going to do what you want to do anyway?
Oldbloke wrote: No sign at all. Logic runs thus: Anyone that knows what's in the shed, and wants to try to nick it will not be put off by the sign. In fact, forewarned is for them forearmed. Anyone that doens't know what's in the shed, and has thieving scum tendancies will now know there's something worth nicking, *and* you've warned them that you ahve an alarm that thee have to byass. You always come across as very well balanced to me. I haven't actually fullyd ecided yet whether to put up signage or not, hence the request for advice. My POV is as stated, but I am happy to take on board advice / experience from anyone else wanting to shove their 2d worth in. The dilema seems to be that if I don't put up a sign, the scrotes (who know what's in there) will have a go anyway, and if I do put up signage, it will be like an advert to any uninformed scrote that there's something in there worth nicking. <snip> Good idea but can you get to the shed in time if it goes off? As others have said, I wouldn't bother with a sign but if you must, just a "This shed has security devices fitted" type thing. Then you should be safe to install shotguns, hand grenades and broken razor blades on the doors and the like[1] [1]Just kidding about the shotguns, hand grenades and razor blades ;-)

Your problem may be that should a disadvantaged youngster attempt to 'borrow' said shed contents and later be found handless then the hand incident could be classed as premeditated , rather than a terrible accident with the electric chainsaw that was left plugged in in the shed.(Is 'in in' correct grammar?) I have often wondered what decibel level an alarm would need to cause bleeding from the ears in a confined space. Steve
