Yes i know, fucking 125's again, not for me, honnest, i have a transalp and
    i'm keeping it,
But the GF isn't likely to bother ever going for her bike test, a 90 quid
cbt every 2 years seems to suit her, so fuckit, it's her money,
She recently got rid of the shitty chinkie scoot, and wants a 'proper bike
wiv gears n stuff', but still wants to ride it on L plates.

She loves the look of the Yamaha TW, big baloon tyres, sort of trials bike
style but not too ott for road use, i.e. a seat that is intended to be sat
on, not too tall (she's about 5'8") and she likes the idea of a bit of
    gentle green laning.

But now she's worried because she's found someone over the age of 18 who
told her the TW is fucking slow, struggles to do 50, is poor value for
money, and hasnt got much grip in the wet and much better bikes are out
there (the 17 years olds all think it's fast as **** and the best thing
since they discovered what their knob is really there for)

An XT would be the next choice, but she thinks they looks gash (but i bet if
someone offered her one for 700 quids she'd suddenly like it),
What she dosent like are things like the good old DT, KMX, TS etc that i
grew up on, too tall and too off roadie, not to mention nickable, oh and 2
stroke which she never wants again after her pug vivacity tried to nip up on
her when the oil pump got an air bubble in it.

All i can think of is the suzuki vanvan, but i dont think they are in her
price range (looking for one y2k plus) and no idea what they are like,
Any other on road off road style bikes to check out?

Her budget is 7-900 quid, i've said she can have the dosh i get for the
micra if i can sell it soon, and if anyone wants some die cut vinyl stickers
making, any dosh i make on them will go towards her bike.

SOC for sale, L reg Micra, bubble shape, poverty spec, 1 litre,
Cheap as **** to insure and run, red, nearly new zorst & battery,
good tyres, will service and try to hoover up the dog hairs before it's
    sold,
beginning to go rusty, 11 months MOT, 102k miles, £350. Notts.

Die cut vinyl stickers made to your design (within reason)
Cheap as it's a hobby not a business.

All 125s are restricted to IIRC 12bhp. The over-18-year-old is full of
    shit. Show her this:

How about a Honda CLR125 (Cityfly)? Its a 125 with trailie styling but the
seat height isn't too bad. It isn't really meant for anything offroad other
than maybe gentle green laning. However, it has Honda reliability and will
reach 65mph which is par for the course for most 125s. There should be
reasonably good examples in her price range.

This is 'shooting yourself in the foot' territory. If she doesn't take
her test, she's basically restricted to shit learner bikes. If she
*does* take her test, she can get what is probably the best trailbike
ever made, & from the sounds of it, a bike that would be absolutely
    perfect for her.

So load up every review of the Yam Serow you can find, sit her in front
of the screen, & see what happens. Start here -

There is a brand new "Serow" with a 125 engine, XT125 is called here.
Another Dago on a KLX (or KLR, CBA to remember) 650 reports it is a
nice off-road ride. If the look is more important Varadero 125, well
    built and accordingly expensive.

I'd suggest the Honda XR250, which can serve as a decent fun
supermotard for you some day, if fitted with adequate wheels. The
japanese are doing very nice things with that bike as a 'motard (which
I always find when looking for stuff for my XR600).

One of my wisest decisions has been replacing the 125 everyday's scoot
by a 250 scoot. The 125 was just a city hack, the 250 has gone on
800kms in a day trips (and will do a 1000kms in a day trip this
    summer)

i know, to be honnest i doubt she'll ever take her test, she tried to do her
test 2 years ago, failed her theory (due to a question about geared bikes
'because' she'd only ever riden twist n go's, and that threw her for the
rest of the test she said) and gave up.

Her brother recently started as an instructor on bikes, he's down in london
tho, and not sure if he can do 'mates rates' but that's an option sometime i
guess, even if it was some off the clock training with him,
And if she can train for her test in london, she could pass it in nottingham
easily, tho dont they teach you how to flip the v's at cabbies, slap
cyclists arses to make them wobble into a bus queue and punch wing mirrors
off reps cars then dissapeer down a side street on the london test :)
