Has anybody ridden the Strzelecki Track?
Myself & a couple of mates are thinking about coming home from Phillip
Island to Brisbane that way over about a week max..

    * Can you do it reasonably easily on a road bike (GSX1100)?
    * Are the road conditions likely to be ok at the end Oct?
    * Would we need to carry fuel?
    * Any deviations worth considering
    * Anything else to consider?

Now, now Jerry, just because you won't ride more than 400kms a day doesn't
    mean others don't.

Depends on your definition of "reasonably easily"... : )

    Seems a good time.

There used to be some 500kms between fuel stops.

Gibbers are a bitch. Road tyres aren't meant for sand.

If you do it, you'll never forget it...Go for it and good luck.

I'd have been more impressed if the bike had a fairing....

    I thought it'd be better than a VFR400

No. Considered it in the planning stage of the 'round Oz trip but I carried
too much luggage. No room for extra fuel.

  13. I rode (part of) it August last year on the way too/from the Off Centre
Rally at Innamincka, although on the way there I deviated up the Bore
Track (not recommended on a GSX1100). Due to the gas fields the road
is like a highway, wide and smooth. It was a bit corrugated and sandy
between Tibooburra and Cameron Corner, but after that it was a peice of
piss. I was on a Suzuki Freewind (which many consider to be a road
bike anyway), riding with a mate on a Super Tenere and neither of us
had any dramas. I recon you'll be right but you could ring the Corner
    Store just to confirm.

Fuel was not an issue, I topped up at Tib, then a splash at the Corner
Store and I was fine to Innamincka. I get between 250-300kms from a
tank so if you can manage that you'll be fine.

Milparinka is worth a look if you're going past.

Go with an Tenere or similar.. The comfort level will make it worth
while... if you DID drop the GSX1100 it maybe months before you can
get it airlifted back onto the wheels.

how did ya mate find the Super T? Good bike? I reckon it would be
    perfect for that sorta work.

  17. He loves it, never had any dramas in terms of handling the conditions.
It's got a TRX850 motor in it (bolts right in due to identical crank
cases, but you have to adapt the wiring) and a nice can, sounds
awesome. His only regret was that he didn't ride the bore track with
    me :)

That bike could've been a full-dress Electra Glide at the start of the
    journey.
