Go on then, whats the GS like then? It's a big bugger, is it as top heavy as it looks? Do you just use
    yours for road use etc?

No, it's not top heavy compared to say the Tiger. The boxer engine gives it
a fairly low centre of gravity. I'm only 5'8" tall and manage it without a
problem: I do have a 32" inside leg. Seat has 2 positions: in winter when
I'm only making short trips I have it in the lower position as I can get
both feet planted. For touring I put the seat in the higher position: less
secure when paddling at junctions but much more comfortable on my knees as
the angle between my thigh & calf is greater.

I use it only on the road. Many people ride an R-GS off road - just fit a
set of Continental TKC80s. See the off road section of www.ukgser.com for
pictures of the sorts of terrain tackled.

R-GS residuals have suffered like all bikes lately. New ones are being
discounted by £1000. You should be able to pick up a nice 2000 W reg bike
for £3-4k depending on condition. Again, use the ukgser forum as you will
source a much better bike there than on ebay.

Gripes: the main one is that the bike is not ideal for high speed motorway
touring. It will cruise all day at 120mph but the wind blast is not
comfortable. As a general tourer it is excellent. I've made trips to Italy,
Croatia, Austria & Slovenia where it laps up Alpine passes. It's just that
the journey home can be tiresome if you want to munch miles on an autobahn.

I've done it but only in short spells as I find it tiresome. It's very
noisy and windy as my head gets buffetted.. Other, taller riders, report
less windblast as they sit above the noisy air. There are different screens
available too which improve things but I haven't bothered as I don't do
    many motorway miles overall.
