stripped spark plug hole.

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by stripped spark plug hole, Dec 21, 2004.

  1. Well, I think I stripped my spark plug hole... Or to maybe be in
denial, it might've been stripped already, as it was the first time I
took out the plug and put it back in, and when I did so, I didn't even
apply any real force and the plug just "kept going around"..

Well, now to the question, I stuck my finger in the thread hole, and
felt some metal chips from the stripping, and I'd assume some of it
went in to the cylinder walls. Are these tiny chips (I mean, almost
dust-like) chips big enough to do damage, or will they burn right up
when I get the plug heli-coiled up and working again?
Any suggestions? Will I have to tear the whole thing down?

I wonder if you might also try using a powerful shopvac. Get a stepdown
adaptor from a hardware store, that allows you to use normal indoor vac
diameter attachments, then attach a short rubber hose or something that will
allow you to get down into the spark plug gallery. and as close to the
diameter of the plug hole as possible. Might also be useful to rotate the
engine (by hand) while the vacuum is going, to allow some air to move into
the cylinder while you're trying to suck air out.
    No experience, just speculating.

Hey, you know what's real strange? Your name (sig) is 'stripped spark plug
hole', and now, by coincidence, you've GOT a stripped spark plug hole!
Change your name to 'great mileage' or 'lotto winner' or something, man! ;^)
    Seriously, good luck.

A R.E.M. (rare earth magnet) would also help in picking up any filings.
Just make sure it can't come off the end of the tool you are using because
it will be nearly impossible to get back with stripping down the engine.

  4. Or one of those retrieval magnets. The ones that swivel, on the end of a
    little radio antenna.

I would think that the aluminum head is stripped, not many magnets will help
    with that.

    first, is the head aluminum?
also what bike is it? is it easy to get to thehole?
i've done some and they've worked out well.
you could fire it up afterward with the plug still out.
often, the trash blows out and nothing is heard from it.
i'd do the helicoil thing (real helicoils) and possibly vacuum out the junk
    with
    small hose.
    good luck, sammmm

Yeah, right...those photo's are just like the ones you see
of Goldwings and BMW's doing wheelies. Every one of those is
photoshoped and you know it! No shaft drive motorcycle will
ever wheelie. How do I know this for fact? Simple I own a
Goldwing and short of a fork lift or explosives there is no
way in this reality it will wheelie under it's own power.
    ;^)

True, if the head was made out of pure Aluminium. However, if it is an
alloy (and most are), it may contain traces steel in which case, the magnet
will work. Also, I am not sure if it was the head that was stripped or the
spark plug (which is NOT aluminium).

Slight off topic, but something else I should have mentioned - many oil
filters now come with a permanent magnet of some kind in them. When I first
bought my bike, I added a rare earth magnet to the oil filters case (because
mine didn't have one) and couldn't believe how many filings this thing
caught. Even after 20,000 km it is still picking up minute particles of
metal in the oil. I was so impressed I even use one on my cars filter now.
One of the best mods I ever made. Getting back to the original topic, I
offered the advice based on the knowledge that these R.E.M.'s work on the
many alloys used in an engine and this may help.

While I do have some doubts about some of those pictures, it's just
not accurate to say that shaft driven motorcycle will not wheelie.

Shaft drive usually(but not always) suggests images of the GW's,
BMW's you mention. As well as, the Valkyrie that I own. While
these bikes are in no danger of an unintended wheelie, I do believe
they can be urged to wheelie if you are one to generate such abuse,
and the bike is owned by someone else(perhaps stolen!).

But, that aside, shaft drive MC's include a wide assortment of bikes
like, Yamaha's Vmax, Honda's old V65 Magna, as well as others.

I've seen Vmax's wheelied without benefit of photoshop alteration,
and personally wheelied my former V65. In fact, those are two bikes
which I could say might be in danger of the unintentional wheelie.

Regarding the frog, I have no comment, other than to say that those
surrounding this experiment probably found it much more entertaining
    than did the frog. <g>

    Thanks,

And just why is it that you think a shaft drive M/C can't "wheelie"?

Google "rec.motorcycles: shaft drive wheelie" or just a
regular google search. rec.motorcycles is not "normal" by
any means...but it's the only place in Usenet to find
reliable info on obscure brands such as "Spagthorpe".

Yeah, you were young and naive. In the 70's, when the price of copper went
out of sight, aluminum wound up in a lot of strange places. It had a little
problem of deforming, so screw clamps would loosen, the high resistance
joint would get real hot, and your house would burn down.

It did create a career opportunity, though. People would shoot the
insulators off lines out in the desert, and steal the wire for the copper.
There were a few technical problems with that, also, and the gene pool of
common criminals got a little cleansing.

Standing on the gear rack and pulling on the bars as you accelerate will
wheelie most bike, however, many bikes (read most sports bikes) will keep
going past the vertical using this method so I don't recommend it lol.

lets not get into the 'driveshaft won't wheelie' stuff.
    it's not a fact.
seems both my v-maxes wheelied, and damn well, too.
