Straightening Forklegs

  1. Yep. Should be there with a big red pontiac with flames and a convertable
    'official pace car' (can't miss 'em) amongst the others somewhere.

    Back in my day, if you bent the forks, you would stand in front of the bike
    with the wheel between your legs and turn they bars till it all lined up
    again. Then you'd ride home. Bloody young people today always trying to do
    things the expensive way

    As a boilermaker and a motorcyclist of 12 years tinkering experience
    i'd say; buy aftermarket replacements, but buy good ones. The chroming
    on the cheapies wears off quicky. I've had good success in the past
    with franks forks (or maybe frankie's forks) somewhere in the states.
    They've made replacements for a couple of bikes i've bought crash
    damaged (a bad habit of mine as my partner keeps reminding me).

    I wouldnt trust my own safety to re-bent forks, though i have against
    better judgement straightened the mast on my catamaran which is loaded
    in compression always. it had not kinks or wrinkles. My shop has a
    good variety of presses; about 9 i think, and if you wanted to ride out
    to smithfield im sure i could convince one of th press operators to try
    and rebend it for you, free of charge. You'd have to disassemble it
    yourself. I would think that any re-bending would then require
    machining down to original specs and then re-chroming which starts to
    get expensive.

    If i was going to do it really on the cheap, and as someone who has
    seen 300+kph i know what it means to do repairs on the cheap, i would
    shrink it with an oxy and a wet rag. I would also be happy to do this
    free of charge just for the fun of it, but you'd have to sign a waiver
    ;-)
