One of the biggest drawbacks of moving to an open plan office scenario
is not being high enough up the pecking order to have your own office
(particularly when you used to have one).

When a 'my office please - now' situation comes up you can't deal with
it in public. The cooling off period while you find somewhere to conduct
a serious bollocking (even without shouting) may perhaps be good for the
blood pressure, but it gives the miscreant more time to cook up a good
    story.

  8. I once sat through the morning half of a "management board" meeting
of the lab I helped run in Switzerland, trying hard not to doze off. When
we broke off for lunch my boss said to me, "You were pretty calm while
Joachim (one of the Professors) was talking." "Why, what did he say?" "He
was slagging-off you and Uli as being totally unhelpful to the users."
"Oh? _Now_ will you believe I don't understand German?"
Plenty of time yet for a second childhood, old chap!

I had one of those earlier. Some folks in the US who just don't seem
to listen. In the last year or so I've constantly astonished myself
with my tact and diplomacy, not to mention the simple fact of holding
my temper. Although as I said earlier, that latter is a lesson I
learned the hard way a long time ago.
Quite. I'll propose a toast to keeping one's cool in the most adverse
    situations. Cheers!

Oddly, my newsreader didn't display it properly, but it's fine when I
quote it. And yes, it's the right way round.
On the accent? Or do you mean real work?

    ****, I don't know what the world's coming to, I really don't. I'm
    also busy composing a response/proposal based on this arvo's t/c. I'm
in 'Leadership' training courses for the next three working days so
I've got to do this in my spare time, as it were, while the discussion
is still fresh in my memory.

Cognac? Pah. That was three hours ago [1]. Port now, then bed.

[1] My attempt at not drinking for a week having fallen at the third

Think of it as you becoming terrifying. I do that sort of thing in
meetings, where someone's having a serious go. Elbows on table, chin on
knuckles, interested expression. Eventually they run down. Then I discuss
    the flaws in their position.

  17. Ok, maybe it shouldn't have been in public, but the fact of the ****
lying to you deserved a bit of shouting, imo. Head stuffed in drawer and
slammed with prejudice would have been understandable too.

All the same, I don't see why you should have been the victim, albeit a
    self-made one.

You can do a reasonable NI accent. I'd try using on telecons IIWY.

Depends on the level & 'type' of person doing the shouting ime. The guy
who bought the company I work for (as a retirement hobby) made in
excess of ?60 million from his previous company (which he started from
scratch), hence was proven at being damn good at what he does.

His management style in meetings was to shout a lot & call people
"useless fucking wankers" on a regular basis. However nobody really
minded because it was just 'him', & you had to respect the guy for his
    achievements.

I'm not sure the same would apply in a large corporate, but that's one
of the things I love about working for a small company. Everyone knows
everyone else well enough to say pretty much what they like, & yes, I
did call someone a thick **** once.
