Maybe he enjoys all the insults that you lot are happy to indulge him
with. Some of them are amusing though.

at the risk of being helpful, if you look at cardboard carton
equivalents for things like tomatoes, kidney beans etc. even the
organic versions are about 60% of the price of their non-organic
tinned equivalents. This is in Tesco, BTW.

Same in Sainsbury's. Plus the carton tomatoes seem to taste nicer,
maybe the metal can taints the flavour a bit.

use your eyes, people! They're usually between the tinned stuff and
things like tubes of tomato puree.
like a small carton of fruit juice:

    near the bottom.
not as long as tinned for sure but <fx: goes and checks grocery
cupboard> the ones I bought this morning are marked BBE Sep 2011 - so
long enough unless you're planning to stock your nuclear bunker.

sure, I know; it was just that I bought some in Tesco this morning,
along with some cartons of kidney beans and cannellini beans this
    morning[1].
I think you're correct - plus, they stack neater/more efficiently in
the cupboard. And, though I don't really care, they're "greener"[2]
    than tinned.

[1] making a large batch of chilli tomorrow.
[2] well, the tomatoes are still red, of course.

  10. You can freeze tomatoes.

One plant per person in the family will give you enough to eat some as
fresh as they get every day and a surplus from July to October which can
be bunged into the freezer for use as mush at some later time. Piss easy
to grow and as they mostly grow upwards they take very little of your
    precious outdoor bike storage space.

There is a downside if you hold shares in Tesco in that once you have
found a variety that suits your palette you will never buy the crap they
    sell ever again.

They do need lots of this.

some canker-like lurgy around here, makes the stems & fruit go brown.
Indoors or under cover is the only option and I can't be arsed.

  17. Always fucking technology with you people innit. Why?

Ok I am lucky in that there was a stream (which now runs underground) a
few yards from my back fence and this means the water table in this
immediate area is quite high but the tons and tons of organic materials I
have incorporated into the soil and the water management that I have put
in place to direct rain water run off into the growing areas rather than
around them means that even in this low rainfall area in the height of
summer there is enough available water that additional watering is rarely
    needed even in the greenhouse.

An otherwise underreported by product of this sort of shit is that the
money I haven't spent on gadgets is available for more important things,
    like drugs and hookers.

  19. Rain probably. Toms is mountain plants in the wild, which means genes
adapted to good drainage, they are not at all fond of cold and damp.
Chilly they can take reasonably well but mixed with damp and they fall
    over and die.

Then yours is a future full of mass produced crap from a cardboard carton.

Last summer we were away for quite a long period and this was the only
way to keep them alive. Other than rely on not very reliable neighbours.

We've managed in the past (for shorter periods) with upturned 2 litre
    plastic bottles full of water.
    Heh.
