Sign me up, I have insurance. Most states without helmet laws require it
    anyway.

  2. I agree, and feel that Americans have all but completely lost sight of the
responsibility side of the rights and responsibities equation that is
    actual freedom.
I'm still agreeing, but do you mean to say that riders who choose not to
    wear helmets are hurting others?

Man, rough day on the Net. First I have to agree with Demetrius on
something, and now I have to agree with Troy the Troll. The three times I
spent time in Canada, including the time in allegedly stuck up Quebec,
introduced me to some of nicest, warmest, and most accomodating people I've
met anywhere. I'll keep spelling it Canada, as well.

  6. Wonderful people. Gorgeous mountains. I'll keep spelling it Canada I
myself, I'm partial to the mountains, and I would avoid eastern Canada like
the plague on general principles...plus they have French leanings, which
makes me nervous. But the western Canadians are pretty wonderful people, I
can't think of a single one I DIDN'T like for cryin' out loud. I mean, the
people you talk to at the sandwich shops to the drillers on the rigs, hang
on a second....I DID meet a prick company man up in the bush once. But I
think he came from Texas and had immigrated.

  7. ok, now what if the insurance companies get their way and are allowed to
put 'source' restrictions on that let them deny coverage for injuries
caused by 'hazardous' activities such as Skiing, Motorcycling, etc ?
They tried this a few years ago, and I believe were disallowed this by the
government agencies in charge at the time... I don't doubt this will
    rise its ugly head again....

That reality is not one that I've seen anyone argue with. And in
point of fact, I attended an ABATE rally in Phoenix a couple of years
    ago and wore my helmet.

It's too bad a national helmet law wasn't in place way back in the
60's... we would have all grown up accustom to a helmet law as safe...
bare headed riding might never got started as style...

    Andy Burnett replied:

Sorry Andy, I must disagree with you here. Any accidental death (whether
it's traffic related, work related, etc.) has a tremendous hidden cost for
our society. A few years back I saw some research done in regard to how
much depression costs our society -- on how much it actually cost of
having people mourning someone death and its ramifications, (alcoholism,
etc.). Not to get too political here, but this is also one of the reasons
why I think it was a dreadful mistake to invade Iraq -- someday all those
troops have to come back and supposedly conform to our society again.
Studies from the Vietnam war show that we are still, thirty years later,
paying vastly for those broken souls who still can't fit into our society.
If you are patriotic, you ought to think of what's best for your nation
and its people in the long haul... hence, bring the kids home now, and
don't repeal any helmet laws! Besides, the people around the world
already hate the US, so this invasion won't do much for our homeland
security. Again; there's a hidden cost for most everything... the same
goes for that misguided Harley squid who wants to ride without a helmet.
    We all pay for it.

  14. Users of such bikes routinely break
That's why we need my proposed Extra Speed Initiative as part of
    California's next ballot measure...

(Google snippet dated 11-02-02 by Larry L)
You look at the volume of California ballot measures and realize our
rock ribbed legislators are not dealing with some key issues facing
    voters...

Then a you notice voters often use "direct democracy" the initiative
process as a form of power of the people to place measures on the ballot
requiring a simple majority to either create... change or amend the
    California Constitution...

Then it hits you... you may place on the ballot something relevant to
    motorcyclists The EXTRA SPEED Initiative...

To amend the California Constitution you need to is hunt down signatures
of registered voters equal in number to 8% of the votes cast for all
candidates for Governor in the previous gubernatorial election...

In your good natured diabolical mind a light starts to glow... with low
numbers projected in the up coming election there will be an equally low
number in which to apply the 8% requirement...

You may wonder how to go about granting more speed and here's what it
    might take...

A California Motorcyclist may QUALIFY for the Extra Speed by...

1... possessing a 5 year accident free record...

2... attending their local race track which has been set up by Cal Trans
engineers with cones and speed limits in accordance to the current
    highway standards...

3... navigate the course successfully at highway speed then qualify for
10... 20 or 30 over judged by a paid panel of off duty CHP officers...

You know if the CHP are trained and certified to handle extra speed...
    you can too...

You know suggested speed limits for corners favor Winnebagos but
    penalize a modern motorcycle...

You know you may safely exceed a corner's posted limit... but... not
without risking a fat fine or imprisonment or both...

You know Extra Speed may also speed up the economy by consuming more
gas... more tires and more places visited...

You know it's about time one ballot initiative addresses... your
cumulative skills... your modern motorcycle... your DMV record...

Are you interested or would you sign a ballot petition called The Extra
    Speed Initiative???

Just a passing comment from a limey. Here in the UK its da law, you
ride a bike on the road, you MUST wear a skid lid.

    1. Why do you think motorcycle racing folk wear them, for fun?

    2. I'd not be putting a comment here at all if I didn't wear one coz
its saved my head from being mashed a couple of times over the past 15
    years.

You're making a good case for banning motorcycles.

One of the fundamental freedoms we enjoy in this country is the right to
decide how much risk we're willing to take in many endeavors. You point
out the lost opportunities caused by untimely death and the ensuing grief.
I think that if you take away enough adventure from some people they will
slip into the decay of apathy. In fact, I fear that would happen to me
without some of the outlets I have.

I thoroughly agree. But I also think there's always a balance between how
we can make things safer and still not slip into that decay of apathy as
you mentioned. I remember a girl once told me that I "just love to live
in danger" but I bluntly replied; "That's not true at all, I just like
riding fast motorcycles, and if it was completely safe, I would love it
    even more."

No Henry, that would be the rider who has sold his motorcycle and now drives a
car with abs, seat belts, air bags, roll-over protection, crush zones, safety
glass, telescoping steering column, anti-intrusion door beams, traction
management system, radar-actuated emergency braking, CHMSL, etc.
