Exactly what happened to my GSXr600.

Chained to wall, disc lock, parked in by car and under a cover....

They took the lot. So all those security measures were of absolutely no
    use.

The bike was fitted with a chain through the rear wheel etc but

Chaining it to nothing will deter thieves, and also halt them from
    stealing it.

One of the researchers with the MRA, Michael Czajka did a paper on this
recently. It's in the current MRA Newsletter issue. To quote an excerpt
    from it:

"Motorcycle theft in Australia is running at roughly 1900% higher than
comparable rates for other vehicles. This is an amazing figure and one
that bears closer examination. It might also explain where unlicensed
riders are getting some of their bikes from.

    "What are the figures?

"The total number of Australian motorcycle registrations is ~300,000.
Total registrations of all Australian vehicles is ~13M.
This makes motorcycles ~2.5% (1/40) of total registered vehicles.
There were 4,060 un-recovered motorcycles in Australia in 2003.
There were 9571 un-recovered cars in Australia in 2003.
70% of motorcycles are not recovered (out of a total of 5,800 thefts).
~17% of cars are not recovered (out of a total of 55,076 thefts).

    "Putting it in perspective

"The bike figure for non-recovered vehicles is 42% of the car one! That
means 1 in every 73 bikes is stolen and not recovered but only 1/1358
cars is stolen and not recovered. This is a ~19x (1900%) difference!"

I think so many are nicked because:
    - it's easier. 2 strong men, a skateboard, a van, that's 90% of bikes
gone, disk lock and all, deal with the disk lock later.
    - They crash a lot, people want parts to fix crashed bikes. And
are cheap about it.... I'll bet more than one wrecker and more than
one bike shop are not that particular about where they get things from.
    - Harleys are, I believe, a big slice of the stolen bikes. They have
lotsa interchangeable parts, and even more people who are willing to
work on their own bikes, and buy dodgy bits.
    - the bikes that a lot of people race share lots of bits with the ones
others ride on the road. In the UK about 5 years ago, a blitz on a proddy
racing paddock netted something like over 1/3rd of the bikes were nicked,
and it's probable that more were using stolen parts. Again, cheap gear,
who is going to ask the hard questions?
    - dirt bikes are another huge slice of the total. Those are just taken
and ridden into the ground in farms and illegally in forests.

When I put a new motor[1] in the T, I had to show a receipt for it when I
changed the engine number on the rego papers. Which I could easily have
written myself! Ditto the XT, all they wanted was a receipt to rego it.

As for all the other parts I've bought over the years, no receipts
    needed for them.

The DataDot style of marking parts should help, but only if the register
is kept up, and only if people check for the damn things before buying.
And it would only affect people who care if their kit is stolen.

Does that include things like trailers, forklifts, tractors, the four-seater
John Deere ATV's the ANU grounds staff use to hoop around in? What's the
theft rate for those Mercedes trucks that sit 15 feet off the deck that the
    army use?
Are those 5,800 thefts of registered motorcycles alone, or do they include
    motocross/enduro/farm/race bikes?
The stripped chassis of a stolen car doesn't fit too well into a dumpster
out the back of the local supermarket, nor can it be easily flung over the
railing on a bridge over a large river, or a canal, or an inlet, or a
fjord... meaning the thieves usually have to go through the tiresome
business of finding a deserted industrial area in the middle of which to
dump the car and set it on fire, making its being noticed and pointed out to
the coppers, who'll then come along and scribble things on their little
    notepads, something of an inevitability.

Had the author taken the time to think about the situation behind the
statistics instead of just presenting whatever disparities he can find among
the numbers, and making as big a deal of them as would be warranted if they
were evidence of the existence of a parallel universe, his writings would
portray him as something less of a clown... or a News Corp journalist, at
    least.

If this is the sort of reasoning this guy really put into something
borderline official, whether it be a report, or a speech, or a lecture, or a
faken conversation among three people that took place in a pub, his calling
himself a "researcher" should be cause for people who doorknock for Telstra
    and Optus to take offense.

....and I'd tell him this to his face; faken crankcase.

If it can be seen, it can be stolen. If you ride a bike, and are moving into
a highrise apartment building, take along a tape measure and check that the
lifts are long enough to take your bike.

(Harley riders might have to consider dangling some kind of hoist over their
    balcony)
