I just want to steal Bobby's thunder and say how stupid your brother
must have been, and that he deserved it, and that it was actually
Bobby's mate who stole it because he steals bikes for a living and that
he has emotions and a family to feed too and whatnot...

Or not. Sorry to hear it Steve!

That does suck. I would love to hear information from the police about
their investigations into motorcycle theft. It appears that it is
running rampant in Melbourne (I'd imagine most other states too).
Everthing I've heard from police and insurers indicates that its large
scale and quite organised. So the question begs to be asked.... who
the **** are these guys? And what is the industry doing to prevent
    stolen parts being purchased?

I had my GSXR 750 stolen a couple of years back - it was 8 months old
at the time. The bike was found 6 months later in a ditch in the
Western suburbs completely stripped of everything except the bottom of
the motor, and parts of the frame.

Did he have any lock or other security device?

I have recently bought the 04 gixer 750 - and i bought one of those
Kyroponite locks and chains. It was the dealer's top of the line lock
and chain. I made them discount it heavily as a condition of sale...My
bike now gets chained to my house, through the frame. I also plan to
fit an alarm in case people feel like tampering with the frame and
lock. Can anyone recommend good alarms for sportsbikes, perferably
with some sort of area/motion sensor.

Hope your brother gets his insurance quickly and without too much
    fuss.
    Cheers,
    G.

Best approach would be to make every effort not to let on that a late-model
sportsbike is to be found at your place. Warm it up in the garage with the
garage door barely open, try to have a choice of routes to get home, make
sure nobody's tailing you once you hit your suburb, and don't pull into your
driveway if you don't like the look of any people or cars who might see you
do so. Likewise, try to minimise the period of time the bike spends in the
driveway between pulling in and getting the garage door open.

If you keep your bike out on the street, or in your yard, or anywhere where
it can be seen, you might as well tie a big helium balloon with the words
"STEAL THIS BIKE" on it to one of the mirror stalks. If they can see it, or
if they know where it is, they'll have a way of getting it in their
    repertoire.

If you have to, fold the mirrors back every night and ride it in through the
front door, into the hallway, and leave it to sleep there. Just keep it out
    of sight.

You hang out at the (presumably) Hell's Angels clubhouse and you were
puzzled by the sight and cost of a V-Rod? Unsurprising...

I had reason to do an electronics service call yesterday morning at a
house well south of central Brisbane
( Jimboomba ) interesting bloke . very tall , redheaded and a seriously
into Harley kind of guy ( Ive seen him at the Angles local club house)
he let me in 'cause the dog liked me but only after checking me very
carefully , there bolted and chained to chemset bolts in the living room
carpet was a spotless candy red and chrome H ( 4 cam motor)
I stepped to close and the alarm instructed me to step away .. very
    weird :_)
He said to replace was 32k ?.
    ouch

Yeah, that was my mate, Steve. He thinks your bro's an idiot for leaving the
keys in the ignition. My mate doesn't steal bikes that don't ask to get
stolen. He's a top bloke and most people like him. There's nothing he
doesn't know about bikes. He also gets anyone cheap parts and sells them
    through me :).

The bike was fitted with a chain through the rear wheel etc but
unfortunatly there was nothing to chain it onto. The bike was in a
"secure" carparking area of the units/appartments he lives in.

The bike was parked across his bay against a wall with his car nosed
up towards it. Who ever took it apparently forced one of the
pedestrian access doors and then dragged the bike out the side of the
bay, and presumably lifted the rear off the ground and then loaded
    onto trailer or similar.

The bike was under a cover, but from outside the building you can see
inside at night as there are openings allowing people to see in and
lights on (I asssume as some kind of deterrent).

I guess we will find out how good his insurance company is (same as
    mine).

    Regards

    Steve

Put a sign on it for $10 dollars, apparently this works for lounge suites.
