    In town, yep.
Look at the pictures I've taken in the mountains, it's much more
    picturesque there...
And yes, they are *addicted* to new stuff over here.
If you go and have a look at a scrapyard you'll find the majority of the
cages get thrown away because they are "old" - which equals a vehicle 5
years old and approx. 10,000 miles on the clock...

I thought a lot of the 'old' vehicles are exported to places like Oz
and the UK. Or isn't this really the case?

Lots of companies here who buy 3-5 year "old" vehicles and ship them
    there, aye.
Still enough cages for the junkyard, especially the smaller ones...

might fit the bill ... and with ridiculously low mileage, too.

I've not bought a cage here (and don't intend to do so) but as far as
bikes go, the decision for the SRX was purely based on price: '88
model, 11,000km (approx. 7000mls) on the clock when I got it and they
bowed repeatedly and tried to excuse that the bike has "been used so
much" - FFS, if they receive proper care these old Yammie singles will
do summink like 50-60,000 km before one needs even to /listen/ for
funny noises, let alone open the engine... oh and, the day after I rang
the dealer (well had one of my Japanese colleagues ring him and ask him
the questions I wanted answers for) they rang back and asked if I would
mind them changing the blue tank (as in the picture in the magazine)
for a silver one because they had found some minor dents and scratches
on the other one... of course not, mesays, and when I got there for the
usual check before parting with my dosh I found that they had not only
replaced the tank but all painted parts so "she would look nicer". At
no cost. And they even showed me the other bits...

But the really expensive bit over here is "shaken" a.k.a. MOT. Which is
due on a bi-annual basis and is a real PITA because it does not only
consist of some very important bureaucratic guy going over the bike
with a *very* fine comb (they even check tyre pressure and chain
tension!) for about two hours but includes a minimum TP insurance on
top of it (which only covers a compensation so low that it's next to
useless) and a general vehicle tax. Which in total can cost anything
between 50,000 and 210,000 yen (approx. UKP 250 to UKP 1050) for a bike
of 250cc and more. Then you have to add the annual weight tax (4,000
yen for the SRX) and an additional insurance. All in all the SRX has
cost me so far 135,000 yen (bike, shaken) plus 49,000 yen (additional
insurance 2004, weight tax) plus roundabout 30,000 yen (replace
original first tyres with BT45, rectifier, K&N air filter insert, new
fork seals) - not bad, considering the general price level over here.
    ::chuffed::

And a very flickable little bugger the "X" is...

I love dealing with the Japanese. They're so polite. I like the
bowing. I also like the business card thing they do[1], I've been
    practising it...

[1] Business card presented to receipient held by it's top two corners
so recepient can read it. Recepient studies for a while, say, 5-10
    second. Recepient then reciprocates.

  11. We had some Japanese people from Sony come to visit us when I was on the
Smartcard project. We went through all that protocol. As you say they
are nice people to deal with but they are nobody's fool - they really
wanted to know what we wanted and why and definitely recognised the
    business potential.

Japanese companies, in my limited experience, work in a very different
way to European ones. A much more collabarative mutual advantage type
    model.

Exactly my reaction. Either that or Tallbloke cropping up with "typical
japper crap, a Norton would have stood up to it, no problem"
