Well, I am getting fed up with this bike hunting lark, just can't find what
I want, probably because I don't know what I want.

So I am open to suggestions.... think I'm gonna regret saying that!

I would say my criteria but you have all been bored to death with that
    already.

Love the look of the new CBF500 but would have to go over budget to get a
"slow" bike, ideally a pink Bandit would suit eh.

Oh how the hell does one decide?

  3. If I like the look of it and I can afford it, I'll sit on it and ask for
a test drive and then buy the thing.

That's what I did with my last 3 bikes and no probs *yet*

Here's the moon on a stick. Hold that and listen.
Keep looking *properly* within the categories of bike you had/ have
    narrowed it down to.

Loot, admag, local paper, cards in bike shops, spares places, training
schools notice boards. Ask your mates, if they know of any coming up
for sale, get them to ask their mates. Look on the forums for the
bikes you are interested in. Use the bike press stuff, in print and
    online.

There are people out there who want your money for their bike. It
can't be that tricky surely unless you want something very out of the
    ordinary.

You should get a list of bikes from this trawl. Narrow that down
further if you want by tweaking your categories - say only ones after
a certain year or below a certain insurance group or only with a full
    service history.

Ring up/email about ones that sound OK. Go and look at them. Find one
that feels right for your back, seems to have been reasonably
mechanically looked after, doesn't have any problems that can't be
fixed or you aren't bothered about (colour for example).

Sort out test rides if wanted. Then buy one that fits criteria and you
    can afford.
Nah, I'm going to be old and decrepit one day, it is good to have all
    this info in advance.
If all else fails toss a coin. If you say to yourself 'best out of
three' on seeing the result then you'll know that you really want to
    do the opposite.

Now can I have the moon on a stick back please.

They do these small cars in France that may suit you, apparently they come
in gery and yellow only but I suppose you could paint it pink.

Oh I think I've got a reason to not buy everything now... been told the
hornet is a revvy engine wanted something lower down power... was gonna say
torquey but could not spell it without it sounding like I want a bike from
    Devon.

Here's my criteria for those that missed it:

    Upright
    £1 to £3K
    Not to revvy
    Light
Wind protection (faired or fly screen poss)
    Available parts (not to dear)
    Must take Givi box

Does sound like my old Bandit don't it... well apart from the "light &
    revvy" bit

    Errr... No !
I looked at the Hornet because it was light and low, but got put off when I
was told they are a lot more "Buzzy" than the Bandit.

Well, I was going to say that the Harley is up for sale, but it doesn't
meet all of your requirements unfortunately :-(

Just something a little different to consider if you fancy a bit of
character. I think it fits with your criteria, although I'm not sure how
much they weigh. I'm pretty certain they carry their weight well though
I.e. low down. 650 v-twin so grunty rather than revvy, parts available
but might take slightly more effort to find than Jap stuff. There's a
very active Guzzi owners club who can probably help you get anything
    you'll need anyway.

An SV650 would be a better bet if you want life to be simple, but a
Guzzi would be so much more rewarding (imho). You can google for pics,
but here's the first I came across -

I've never ridden one. I'm just reenforcing a popular myth. But they do
seem to fit your criteria reasonably well.
