  1. Never heard of cassette gearboxes? Virtually one touch, they are.
    Right back at you, mudbrain.

  2. As Lozzo said, Japanese gearboxes are tough; they've been pretty tough
for the past couple of decades, especially in bigger bikes that are
going to get abused. The problem is you can only take hardening of
materials so far before you start getting into brittle territory and
it's the ends and edges of sliding/rotating components that start to
    suffer.

It's cumulative. If you own a particular bike for long enough, you'll
start to find out just what you shouldn't have been doing.

Fwiw, the GS 'boxes are pretty tough, but a PO (clutchless changing ****
that he was) left me with a 2nd gear that jumped out under load after
I'd had the thing for 10K miles. For the next 30K I simply went from 1st
to 3rd until I eventually stripped the box and found the gear dogs were
    knackered.

  3. Ehmmm.... one of the later GSXR 750s had it. It surprises me that more
bikes don't, especially in the classes that are likely to be raced.

  5. I saw some trooping round Norwich last week.

And another thing: no-one seems to keep woad any more....

I've got an ex-dibblery R80 that does that. Is that more likely to be
    the dogs or the selectors?

Would I be sensible to get an exchange from MotorBins or (try to) fix it
myself? Assuming it doesn't need an array of special tools I'd not be
    afraid to tackle it.

IIRC under load its dogs, offload its selectors as the primary cause.

IME [1] if its jumping out of gear, both are likely to be pretty shot.
The worn dogs partially disengaging and loading the selectors causing
    them to wear.

[1] BMWs may be different but the problems ones I've had have, shall we
    say, have also been German.

And there wasn't even a then/than in sight!

Anyway, I think you've worked out what I meant now :)
You're preaching to the converted here as you know - I will wince about the
cost of certain things, but still - really must use the bike more to get
    some VFM.

Actually that's a lie - the leathers still look brand new and they are now
    over two years old :)

Yeah, but that was something you just made up. God, if people go around
just making up stuff to post to ukrm then where will we be?

    Yeah, I apologise. My mistake
My MJKs are like that, done thousands of miles in them and they look no
different to when I picked them up.

Ta. I think an exchange rebuilt one is indicated as it drops out mainly
under load in first and second, but sometimes on the overrun.

After getting out of hospital they gave me my crash helmet back along
with the odd boot and gauntlet. Giving it a pulling-about a two inch
crack opened up in the front, and a three-inch one by the right ear.

It looked fine at first sight, so I didn't want to put it in the dustbin
in case it found its way onto some kid's head via a bit of totting, so I
placed it over a concrete block and hit it with a 4 lb club hammer until
I was exhausted. (Three months under repair does sap your strength)

I had a cup of tea, then got the sledge-hammer out and hit it with that
until I could hit it no longer, after which the cracks were no longer.
    So I cremated it.

Impressed with its resilience i went out and bought another Stadium
Project 4. (When my mother saw the box she went ballistic, as she'd
hoped that I'd "learnt my lesson".)

Later, unable to bend one leg enough to get on a solo, I returned to my
    first love, charioteering.

  13. I don't recall offhand which model variation it was but one of them
definitely had it. My thought at the time was it was for proddy racing
in any case, but it was available off the showroom floor, as it were.

I think they dropped it in later ones, perhaps production costs or
    reliability came into play.

    A mate had one, in...umm.. 96ish.

There was a limited edition GSX-R 750RR homologation special for
superbike, so I guess it was that.

    There were 2 versions. 1986 GSXR750RG and 1989 GSXR750RK. I don't recall
either of them having a cassette gearbox.

My mate Darren had an RG model, all I remember about that was that it
ate clutches and he wasn't any quicker on it than the FZ750 boys
