As the rebuild continues, I reckon I am better off replacing the
shagged thirty year old fasteners with nice new stainless steel
ones. Does anyone have a preferred supplier of fasteners who won't rip
    me off for small quantities?

Presumably Champ has (so long as he gets Wendy on the line):

I used them to replace all of the fasteners when I rebuilt my LE, they have
a very wide range and should be able to match non-velocette items.

These people are in Tewkesbury: http://www.tastynuts.com/. Presumably you
    know about them?

And http://www.allcap.co.uk/ are quite good according to my son. He's a
mechanic at BMW (cars, unfortunately). The Web site isn't the best
    though...

It used to be that you could get full sets of stainless fasteners for things
like SOCB550s. I don't know if that's still the case.

**** no, they're 3x the price of using a standard fastener shop!

Being a lazy cnut, I use ebay. Just search for "stainless M6"
or whatever and you're bound to find something. Beware that
the bike-specific packs are more expensive than just buying
a bulk pack of bolts. Also they tend to do a lot of packs
that are advertised as "120 items!" but turn out to be 40x
bolts, 40x washer and 40x nuts, making 2/3 of it not wanted.

Some of the ones I've used and recommend have been:

    http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Thunderbolt-Direct

You certainly can for 400 Fours and CB750s and other more popular
SOBs. Dunno about the 550, though, but I'd be surprised if someone
    didn't do them.
