Stainless Steel Bolts

    Lots of the HiTen bolts on the Trophy are past their best and I want to
    replace them with stainless ones. Now I know stainless isnt as strong
    as hi tensile, but 'in the real world' is there any I *definitly* should
    not touch?

    Changed the brake/clutch lever bolts and the shiny stainless actually
    look allright.

  2. Any that will have shear force on them. ie brake caliper bolts, brake disk
    bolts

    Any that comes in contact with an alloy which is far enough down the
    elctrolytic scale to create a galvanic cell resulting in much nasty
    whiteness.

    Last time I checked (during my Btec in mechanical engineering) stainless has
    a greater tensile stregnth than steel ( which is why its used for spokes)
    sorry cant actually help you here other than pointing out that every bolt on
    your bike will have a "factor of safety" which means it will be able to take
    X amount more stress than its actually intended for. And of course that most
    bolts in the world dont technically hold any load other than tightening
    force . Its usually the friction between the two surfaces they connect
    that's expected to take the load which it why most bolts are applied at 90
    degrees to the actual force acting on the component.
    And bear in mind that stainless and aluminium dont mix well due to lots of
    stuff to do with current flow (its very boring I think I fell alseep).

    *OK*, I've never heard of SS bolts to replace those but I wouldn't say
    *most* bolts are suject to forces like that (off the top of my head)

    Fuckit, I'm going to change them as I see fit then. You may read about
    this in the papers in six months time :-(

    Hmmm...I wonder if the brake clipon things are aluminium? <makes note>
    must check.

    That's the way just check that they are staying tight if they are coming
    lose then it may be a sign that they are stretching I don't think you will
    have any problems unless your bike is a high performance ran close to the
    limit one.
