We have it, apparently. Can anyone recommend a good, free, remover? We
have Avira antivirus software but the upgrade to spyware remover is
    not free.

and, if running windows, the Windows Defender product available from
    Microsoft is quite good

For antivirus I prefer the free version from www.avast.com

  3. Avira is good for viruses, but not a major player with spyware. These
two are the current most-oft recommended anti-malware tools at
    alt.privacy.spyware and alt.comp.anti-virus

    SuperAntiSpyware (free for home use):
    http://superantispyware.com/

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (shareware):
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html

Download -> install -> update online -> scan

AOL. I've found Ad-Aware removes stuff that SpyBot can't do and vice versa.

  5. I'll have to agree. Most of its userbase comes from readers of the
    aforementioned newsgroups.

  6. Spamming? Not I. None of you had mentioned those good tools yet, so I
thought I would help marina. What's wrong with that?

My grandmother was born in Liverpool. Does that make me eligible to post
    with you Brits?

I suspect it tripped the 'unknown poster jumping in to recommend
something' filter. It's usually quite reliable, but I think this may be
    a false alarm.

Thanks for all suggestions. Sadly, every link I clicked on cannot find
the page, except for Microsoft's, which needs a validation code I have
not got. Is the spyware protecting itself? What can I do next?

Download the stuff using a different computer, and transfer it to the
afflicted computer using some physical media?

Not possible - have no other computer except at work, where no
physical media exists (the only way to import or export data is by
email or from the server) and anyway, would contravene data policy.

OK, got SpyBot now, and it found 2 problems, but it stopped scanning
halfway through. I tried to get Ad-Aware but it wanted me to buy from
an offers list before it would let me download. Any way around that?

I was offline today - complete inability to load any programs but
eventually got up and running and immediately got SpyBot, ran it as
far as it would, then ran Avira, which found a load more viruses than
it did yesterday. I'll keep trying these. Any other suggestions? We
have obviously had a serious attack here.

Thanks, I tried that but could not download - now I have fixed a load
of problems (see other post) maybe I'll have better luck.

Windows Defender - Microsoft wanted a code and I have no idea what it
is, nor where to find it. I have Windows XP but no disk.
