Sprint ST suspension (lack of)

Last night as usual i jumped on the Sprint ST which was on its side stand,
stood it up and sat down as usual to hear a loud bang and the bike drop
right down onto the side stand tipping it to the right, i did hold it and
kicked the stand back, stood up and had a hell of a job to get it onto the
    main stand.

Turns out the bracket which holds the rear suspension has snapped right off.

So, 17 months old, 8k miles and this is the best of British so to speak.

A phone call to the local Triumph dealer will be placed just after 9am to
see if they will sort it under warranty.

If this Honda VFR1000GT ever gets made i shall go back to a Jap bike, first
ever British bike, well apart from a Bantam years ago and this is what
    happens.

Errrrrmmmmm I know it's a tad disappointing but really you're going to
have a fit like this. You get one that's got a fault and ignore all the
others that are running fine. If I took this reaction I'd never get
another Jap bike [1] or a BMW [2] or a KTM [3]. I'd be more inclined to
see if the dealer is sufficiently obsequious, grovelling and apologetic.

[1] Kawasaki GT550 air pipe on the rear shock split
[2] R80RT nearly all the engine gaskets replaced at 1st service cos it
    leaked
[3] Duke-II complete engine replacement as it self-destructed at 600
    miles.

Ok i do admit it was a bit harsh, but in over 30 years of Jap bikes i have
    never
had a failure like this, so lets see what the dealer has to say.

I have to get it to him which is no problem and it has to be fully serviced
by a Triumph dealer, the first one was done by the selling dealer but the
second one was not, done by a local garage who does all the bikes in the
village (there are 5 Sprint ST's of 08 vintage) so we could be having words
    soon.

Plenty of others have though. Remember Busa sub-frames cracking? Or
Ben's ZX-10R lunching its engine? All manufacturers have lemons -
you're just unlucky if you get one.
Triumph are pretty good with this ime, especially if you point out how
much free time you'll have at weekends now to post messages on forums &
write to magazines. I used that approach when my sprag failed two years
out of warranty, & they coughed up.

My ST 1050 won't turn over at all on the button. I'm guessing an
electrical interlock issue as when it decides to work, it's fine.

Tried waggling the clutch, and wobbling the button, but I can't see any
    correlation.

Is this a know issue at all? It's got to go in for it's 36k soon anyway,
but pushing it there will be a PITA.

Being somewhat lardy, I'm minded to make a closer inspection of my
ST('07). Can you give any more detail?

Well from lying down on the floor right hand side i can see the bracket
which would usually bolt (allen socket) on the chassis is still there, but
right at the lower end of the shocker is a pin which goes through the other
end of the bracket, this has sheared off completely and in fact is in half
so the shock is just hanging.

Triumph want a fully serviced by them service book before they do anything,
the first was done by them the second by a mate who also has a Sprint, we
    shall see.

It's clearly a fundamental failure and service history is irrelevant in
this case (age and mileage). Just press the issue politely.

Not unless it's in gear, no. It's not neutral cut out either as I've
    tried with the sidestand up.

I had the same problem on mine and I tracked it down to a joint in the
wiring loom halfway along the bars. I had to cut into the loom then
clean up, cut out and solder a rusted crimped joint. Looked like water
had got in there somehow. At first the problem was intermittent as you
describe, then it stopped working entirely. You could prove this
theory by squeezing the loom along its length whilst pressing the
starter (this is what I did) - hopefully the squeezing action will
then complete the circuit and the starter will turn.

I should have mentioned this was the wiring on the clutch switch
    side.

They can't do that because a) the EU passed a directive to outlaw the
practice. You only have to follow the manufacturers schedule and use
approved parts and b) the service history is irrelevant as this is a
fundamental failure as Jeremy puts it.

Even if the bike is out of the warranty period they should repair it,
unless they can prove you were responsible e.g. binning the bike or using
it for an enduro. The frame of a bike should be expected to last the entire
lifetime of the bike, 17 years not months.

There's more, took it to the dealer and they simply wheeled it out into the
workshop and said they would sort it this week, then friendly mechanic
points out the fuel tank has depressed on the LH side down the crease,
and he's right, if you stood behind it each side is different, "the two
    pipes
underneath are on the wrong sides says he, i have seen it before", "best
you get me a new tank as well" said I, and so it shall be.

Hopefully all sorted within a week or so.

Triumphs, I shall buy another Honda next time.
