The nice thing about the Portsmouth crossing was the overnight bit: arriving
in France before sunrise on Friday morning and spending the /entire day/ on
    the road was fab.

Yeah, well... I can stomach getting the 6.30am, and then riding from the
moment I hit the deck in France, too... ;0)

Problem for me is that Dover is 210 miles, so realistically 4 hours. Say an
8AM departure for a noon sailing, plus another couple of hours before I'm
off the boat, and it's 3PM French time. Last September, I hit Le Havre at
7AM local, and got to the hotel at 9PM. That was /all/ time spent riding
around in France - which is why I was there - apart from fuel and map stops,
getting knocked off, and a cheese and ham roll in Amboise.

Pah, you ride like a girl! ;-)

I did Birmingham to Canterbury in 1hr 55mins in the cage (1)... allegedly, a
    couple of weeks ago.

    Say an
I can see what you are saying... I have no idea of what general direction
you were from the ports when you got there etc., so I bow to your actual
    experience.

    (1) A shite old diesel one, at that...

But it's no more difficult, either, plus it's an overnight ferry, so you
get more time on the other side of the channel.

Me too. Sarah possibly, if a suitable conveyance is available. Brother and
SO might be wanting to incorporate this in a week or so over there, so
    probably accommodation only.

There is a nice new Travel-Inn just outside of Canterbury - book in advance,
stay there, get the early boat, jobs a good un.

Plus places like that in Dover etc.

The main factor is, cost, I should think - dunno how much the Dover crossing
combined with a stay at one of those places is vs the cost of getting a
ferry from Portsmouth etc., but worth considering anyway.

It's also less of a ride to Dover for the London / Essex contingent, of
which many more in the NG hail from than darkest Wales... that is, if we
    want to split hairs...

  12. On Sun, 10 Oct 2004 19:45:00 +0100,
Bear in mind that P&O are pulling out of Portsmouth for French
    Sailings.
Rumours are abound that Maersk aka Norfolk Line will be putting in a
no frills service to Cherbourg at the very least.

I don't think that's quite right... would have said more people were based
    to the West
and North of London then are based to the North and East.

Certainly a fair few are Bristol-based and a number of others inbetween
    that.

You are all forgetting the principle principle behind UKRM trips.
TOG, rightly, organises what he wants to do, his way, on his dates.
If other people can make it - great. If not, tough shit; organise
    your own.

I haven't - you will note I have not expressed interest in going.

I was taking issue with Jack's apparent assertion that most of UKRM is based
    in Essex :)

I thought the principle was that TOG gets a free off-season holiday by
gathering up a group of UKRMers and convincing them he knows all about a
_really special_ hotel somewhere in France.

It sounds like a great plan so we all go, usually it rains. When we get
there we're pretty tired so find a bar to relax in. Time passes and we
all get pissed. Part of the reason behind this is that we all secretly
wish it was the middle of summer and alcohol makes it easier to pretend
we're warm.. However sometimes it's simply because a really boring ****
    is talking to us.

The next day we all have hangovers.

  18. That's bollocksed that then. Brittany will be exploiting their
    monopoly mercilessly.
AFAIA the boats are leased anyway, most P&O boats are. The 2 that are
on the Havre route used to be called Olau Hollandia and Olau
Britannia running fron Vlissingen to Sheerness.

Cherbourg is my immediate concern as my property is 50 mins from
Cherbourg and building work is due to start next April so I will need
to get over quick and often.

I'm still willing to bet that Maersk will get in on the Cherbourg
route to continue their westwards expansion.
