It's no shorter a journey from the Midlands, I think Portsmouth works
out about the same as Dover though.

The Older Gentleman emerged from their own little world to say
as in my other post, Brittany Ferries are leasing the 2 big ships that run
on that route - if they are run as well as the Poole route then this will
    be a good thing.

It's the drag round the M25 to get there and back that I _really_ hate.

Overnight crossings are, IMHO, much better anyway.

Agreed. It's only 60 miles further from S Wales to Dover but the nature of
the roads make it seem much further.

If it turns out to be this one, I recommend a pillion ride with
Ballistic, down the aptly named N666.

"Following today’s publication by P&O Ferries (P&O) of their future
strategy and, in particular, the curtailment of their Western
Channel services from Portsmouth to Le Havre and Cherbourg,
Brittany Ferries confirms that it has signed a memorandum of
understanding with P&O with the objective to assume, subject
to the negotiation of definitive agreements and regulatory
approval, the charters of the two cruise ferries Pride of
Le Havre and Pride of Portsmouth and to offer an alternative
    service to Le Havre."

  10. I tried BF in the past - they wouldn't give a group discount. I told
them that if they couldn't, P&O could, and would get the business. And
they didn't, and P&O did. It might be even harder when they have a
    monopoly.

The Older Gentleman emerged from their own little world to say
I didn't do the negotiations but 12 bikes went Poole-Cherbourg. We paid
£88 for a 5 day return using the slow boat in each direction. I thought
that was a reasonable price for a 5 hour crossing when compared to Dover
    Calais prices.

The journey itself was very pleasant too. Lovely scenery in Poole
Harbour beats Dover. Plenty of time to relax a bit, have some food and
get to know the members of the group you have not met before.

Stopped in Givet on the way from Chimay to Luxemburg.

Gassed up, nice coffee and a good chinwag with the owner of the place.

    Nice wee place, it is.

Sounds good to me - just dont involve a French public holiday, eh?

Put me on the list...... barring disasters..... and presuming money is
    available.
