Spring French Run

  1. Reading the recollections of Fr Jack's faux pas last time has made me
    think....

OK, so the May French Run is a way off yet, but I was wondering if
anybody had any desire to return to previous venues.

The good ones I remember are:

Caudebec - fabulous food, nice hotel, slow service, but good.

Duclair - smallish, excellent food, cheap, ferry wakes you up at 7am

Chepy - brilliant food, nice hotel, a bit off the beaten track (ie: in
    the middle of nowhere).

Montmort-Lucy (Champagne) - splendid bar, cheapish, decent grub and
    loads of it.

Wherever we were in the Cherbourg peninsula - OK hotel, decent grub,
lots to see and do nearby.

St Omer (the first one, with a dozen turnout): good hotel indeed, plenty
to see and do local, very short distance from the ports (which may be a
    good or bad thing, depending)

Anybody else have something that springs to mind? Any preferences? I
must say, I fancy the Ardennes - that blew out last year because the
hotel couldn't quite accommodate us all, and in the event with the
people who dropped out, we could have managed it after all. Grr.

Either of the above. I'd quite like to go to a BOSM, so, as long as he
    dates don't clash, I'm in.

Yes. Or somewhere we haven't been yet, I don't mind,
but take this to mean that I'm definitely interested.

Was ok, but the hotel bar struggled.
    And France was closed.
Best of the lot I think, the problem with most of these trips is it's
all ferry and travel to and from France with a fixed return date on the
    tickets.

If I do another one I'll probably just go for the hotel so I can
actually spend a full week in France.

Quite. We eventually stayed at the Val St Hilaire - Auberge de la
Tour. It's a Logis de France in Givet - very nice, although I could
have been prejudiced by the romantic dinner by the banks of the Meuse.

The Older Gentleman secured a place in history by writing:
I could well be up for this next year. I haven't had tyres on French
tarmac for a couple of years on account of inconvenient childbirth
incidents, but I might be able to get a pass next Spring. What are the
qualifying requirements? Do I have to have been knocked over on foreign
soil? Do I need to order a pizza from TOG's new business venture?

Whatever...put me down as unknown quantity, but keen.

(TOG - do you want this work experience thing or not? I need your kiddy's
    full name...)

BOSM is set for the weekend of 9/10th of April 2005. TOG, if you'd like
to arrange your trip around that it'd help a few attendees, thanks.

I particularly liked Villedieu last year and the D666, but I do fancy the
Ardennes this time. As does Sarah.

I liked this one. ISTR beer was cheap-ish here if you didn't use the
    hotel bar.
Probably my favourite one, although last Autumn's was good, too - can't
    remember where it was, though.
Could I suggest we use a Portsmouth crossing again, as it's bloody miles
to Dover for the Welsh and Bristol contingent.

Ahh, yeah, this is the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember.

How about somewhere near-ish to Le Mans - the museum is very good and
you get to ride bits of the track.

  15. Cheers.

Um, it would be a Bank Holiday weekend, so without having a calendar
handy, my guess would be end April/start May.

  16. Oops. Sorry.

Got a lot to choose from. Give me a week or so -I've got to go abroad
    for a few days.

    Bugger.

Making the trip from here to Dover is a bit of a PITA and would
potentially put me off doing a French Run.

Aye, nice hotel and decent ish local bars.
Middle of nowhere though, and only one tiny bar a 10 min walk away.
Roads round there were "straight" but nothing apart from hotel bar, so a
    bit limiting.
    I say this one.

SteveH emerged from their own little world to say

I used the Poole-Cherbourg one on my trip to Normandie. For residents of S
Wales it is great as they have a 11am departure. Does not get into 5pm
French time so you would not want to travel far to your hotel. 5 day return
was £80. There is an overnight one too if you are going further afield.

Brittany Ferries were much better than Sea France, Hoverspeed or P&O that
I've used previously. They tied the bikes down properly and the food was
good and sensibly priced. Apparently they are due to take over the P&O
    Portsmouth to Le Havre route.
