    Hi Chaps,

I'm trying to reassemble some suspension units and I need to borrow some
spring compressors. Anyone in the Glos/Chelt/Tewks area have a set they
    could let me use?

    Here's hoping...

Car or bike? I've got some big ****-off car ones if they're any use.

    Moped. *:(

I was considering trying G-clamps but A&E are fed up of the sight of me!

I suppose I shall have to throw myself on the mercy of the local bike
    dealers.

Whaaa? IWHT you could get those back together without spring
compressors. Failing that, you can normally compress the springs by
hand and tie them up with a bit of welding wire.

I once helped a mate fit new coil springs to his car. We were too poor
    to have compressors.

We did have a jack, paving slabs, a shed doorway and a hacksaw.

Didn't half make a bang when we "released" the home-made compressors...

No, but I thought if you could squish a Rangie spring by hand, a moped
    spring would be child's play!

As it is I've managed to do it. It was great fun: the jaws of the
compressors I borrowed wouldn't fit between the coils so I jammed two bits
of metal between the coils - but not all the way, obviously, because the
plunger goes up through the middle and I had to leave room for that, then I
hooked the jaws around the edges of the bits of metal and put all my weight
on the spring as it was bending and trying to break out of the compressors
whilst Herself held the locking nut with a spanner and I turned the
adjusters and... to cut a long story short they only exploded outwards once
and I successfully avoided visiting my friends at A&E (but not by much).
