You're obviously in need of a acid mole.

Look, I didn't travel less than a third of the country for any of my
bikes; I don't see why you lot can't do that as well.

  7. Have a look at http://www.chem.ubc.ca/courseware/pH/index.html for a
comprehensive rundown of pH and so on.

This is only based on my 19 yo memory of high school chemistry ...
    </disclaimer>
The water molecule is interesting because of the relative differences
between the oxygen atom and the hydrogen atoms. This causes the electrons
involved in the covalent bond to "spend more time" with the oxygen atom,
thus making the molecule slightly more positive near the hydrogen bits and
slightly more negative near the oxygen bit.

This charge difference causes salts to dissolve in water (salts have ionic
bonds which can be pulled apart by the charge difference). So, if you
dissolve table salt, NaCl (Sodium Chloride) in water you will get Na+ and
    Cl- ions in the water.

I think the charge difference also causes water to pull apart water
molecules. In general, there are 10^-7 moles of H+ ions per litre of water
at any given time due to this process.

When an ionic compound containing hydrogen instead of a metal is added to
water, such as HCl (hydrogen chloride) the water molecule pulls the HCl
molecule apart as H+ and CL- ions. The presence of more H+ ions raises the
normal 10^-7 incidence of ions, so the pH rises.
No. pH is a measure of how many hydronium ions are in the solution,
    regardless of other dissolved compounds.

I have a feeling that some acids can have a lower pH than zero. Stuff like
oleum (H2S207, I think) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) spring to mind here, but
    I might be completely mistaken.
Sort of. Molarity indicates how much of a compound is in the solution, but
is not directly related to the pH, because each compound has a different
rate of dissociativity (sp?). In other words, some acids dissolve in better
    than others.

If you put 1 mole of ascetic acid into a litre of water it would be
significantly less acidic than 1 mole of hydrogen chloride in 1 litre of
water (can't remember if 1 mole in 1 litre is the same as a 1 molar
    concentration).

I seem to recall using some stuff that changed colour at a known pH. From
memory, you keep diluting a sample until it is only just able to change the
reagent, the calculate the strength of the original by how much dilution is
    required.
No, no, no, no, no. pH only applies to things dissolved in water. Curiously,
even liquid hydrogen has no pH ...

Not sure that I know more, so I hope I haven't clouded things.

    Any science teachers here?
Sitting at the computer instead of riding motorcycle. It is a gorgeous day
out, I think I'll go for a ride. This stuff doesn't seem to bear much
    relationship with motorcycles at all.

  13. Yeah, its _much_ more rewarding explaining IT consulting to
    Theo...

So Theo, to get your printer to work faster, you _right click_ on
"My Computer", select options -> properties -> permissions, and
check "visible to world", then shut down any firewall software
    you've got installed...

  16. Statistical mechanics would provide the simple answer... a fraction of the
hydrogen atoms will always have energy sufficient to overcome the strength
of the covalent bond and will thus get the opportunity to go for a wander...
    ya know, the whole
    exp(-E/kT) thing.

Beyond that, you're getting into stuff cunts with Crays at their disposal
are going grey trying to model; particle interaction in liquids (shudder)...

Nobody want to argue Boolean algebra anymore. (more an "IS" an "NOT'
than a black and white argument).
I always thought Algebra was fun in school but couldn't understand
where it could be used in the real world. Then I spent 20 years of my
    life doing little else.
