737 miles from SF to Salt Lake City. Start way early, get out of the BA,
drone the valley, hit the foothills, cross the mighty Sierras, short rest,
and blast the entire width of Nevada before finding hotel near SLC.
    75mph X 8hrs = 600 miles. So if fuel/food is done as ASAP, do you think a
12 hour day aboard a fast bike is realistic to get to SLC?

Not in the dead of Winter.

Have you ever ridden/driven the Sierras this time of year? If there's
not ice on the bridges, or snow on the road, there's sand strewn ALL OVER
    the place.

I went over the Sierras in March once, perfect clear blue skies,
31 degrees, and sand all over the road. Scary shit.

    YMMV!

  3. Are you talking via 80, or some other route? I've done it in a cage in a day
with no problem on 80 (although that was in June, not January). It's a deadly
dull trip to take, though. Or at least the parts in Nevada are.

figure 10 hours of riding time + maybe an hour stopping for fuel
(depending on your range) + at least one food stop. So, yes, I'd say you
could do it in 12 hours (but I wouldn't want to do it until at least
    April).

I think a comfortable bike with a big tank/good mileage is more
important than a "fast bike" for rides like this.

I've noticed that I can drive my pickup from the SFBA to San Diego (500
miles) in just over 7 hours (one stop for food/fuel), but the same trip
on my bike takes at least 9 or 10 hours.

    -Bill

p.s. as an afterthought I-80 isn't much of a "sport" ride.

Just trying plan out my ride to the Mt Rushmore/Custer State Park/Badlands
area in late May. Erik, I am the wimpiest fair-weather biker to ever twist
the throttle. Wispy cumulus clouds might stop my ride!

this is neither sport, nor tour, in the classic sense. this is high
    mileage droning on the slab.

Sport implies turns and twists (like Hwy 9, etc) it isn't.
Tour implies seeing things. At your schedule you wont.

Don't cross the mountains in winter, you'll hate it.

Consider the Ironbutt page for more information on distance riding.

All that said, I've done Austin -> San Jose in under 36 hours on a 600
bandit. If you can't make SLC in a day, your a light light lightweight.

Yes, it can be done. I've done SLC to SFBA under 12hrs running at 75, in a
cage. You're gas stops will hafta be in-n-out. Can you eat while riding?

About 10 yrs ago I did San Jose to Portland to Boise to SLC to Grand
Junction to Denver thru Kansas to Philadelphia to the Jersy shore to
Baltimore thru the Blue ridge Mountians, Tenn. Oakahoma texas to the 4
corners area and back to Norcal thru Big Sur. 30 days in July/Aug, Probably
25 days of riding. It rained every day I wasn't in California.

I did this trip a few years ago, and found that 400 miles per day was
optimal in enjoying the ride & the sites. With those numbers, it'll take
    you an easy 3-1/2 days.

Might I suggest visiting Yellowstone? That'll only add one or two days onto
the trip. There may still be snow in that area, but Highway 20 across
Wyoming is well worth the extra effort. The ride from Ten Sleeps into
Buffalo, Wyoming is not one to be missed.

Oh, and watch for Bison in Custer State Park. They like to hang out on the
    road.

  10. So if fuel/food is done as ASAP, do you think a
On a bet I'd do it... but I get to choose the cruise velocity... so make
that a substantial amount mind you... got to cover the price of road
    side graft (tickets)...

Once you get to Reno, graft isn't much of a problem.

Topaz Lake approx. 231m from SF, maybe a four/five hour trip or so. Love
the backside of 89 before 395. What's going on there, are you just
    chillin'?

Maybe I shouldna said sport-tour to SLC, I just want to get away from the
familiar. The sport-touring is going to start as I meander up to my
destination. BTW I wasn't too impressed with Yellowstone as a bikers'
destination. The roads sucked in the park, the concessions were ghastly,
the traffic was extraordinarily slow (weekdays), cars and RV's were just
stopping in the middle of the road whenever a deer poked its' nose from the
underbrush, and yes, sulfur stinks in any state. That said, the roads
getting in and out of the park were some of the most spectacular I've
ridden, especially 14 to the east of the park headed to Cody.

Anybody ridden Pilot Peak/Pilot Mountain Rd. out of Wendover NV up to UT 30,
skirting the east side of the Great Salt Lake? Can't tell if there's enough
human life out there to support a gas station from my maps.......

I'd been thinking of taking State Highway 4 from end to end (Hercules
or thereabouts to the east side of the Sierras near Topaz). That
would be a bit long, so I'd probably take the superslab to Stockton
and pick up Highway 4 from there. Start off early on a June morning,
get back in the evening, get some nice riding and nice scenery...
Sorry, can't help you there. Never been to that particular corner of
the world, but if there's a paved road, there's almost sure to be a
    service station somewhere along it.
