The GSX-R is dying intermittently at traffic lights and I'm not sure why...

It idles - but then starts to idle a bit roughly (it almost hunts ... rather
then rrrrrr, it goes rr..rr..rr..rr) and then cuts out.
    Not very inspiring.

Performance at anything other then at idle continues to be illegally
    faultless.

It's due for it's 18 month/15 000 service in two weeks - any thoughts on
what it might be before I let a man look at it?

Crap in the carbs blocking an idle jet or two? Water in the carb float
    bowls?

Sounds like it is well ready for a new air filter and plugs.

    It's a 2002 GSX-R 600 - FI so no carbs.

I did thnk it might have something to do with the air filter - when I had it
serviced before they commented on how filthy it was.
Not sure if that's just my bike, or a Ram air/GSX-R thing.

Anyway, I will mention it at the service and let them sort it out as the
    warranty lasts until August :)

Or, for the current generation of gixxer you'd say.... "Dirty
    injectors."

My thought is that the idle speed could be set too low (there should be
an adjuster somewhere you can turn to increase it..) On a 600 I'd say
idling around 1500 RPM is fine, that's what the R6 was set at anyway as
it coughed a bit when idling any slower.

1500!! Why is it with all their technological expertise they can't make
engines idle at proper speeds these days?

They generally set the idel as low as possible at a saervice, then as
the filter will have got dirtier it may just be finding it harder to
    tick over at low revs.

Try it anyway and see if it improves the situation, they'll no doubt set
it back as low as it'll tick over at the service.

1500RPM on an engine with a 15000 RPM redline is around 10%.

600 RPM on a machine with a 6000 RPM redline is still 10%.

    HTH.

My Bandit has missing and spluttering sometimes in the winter, due to the
plugs getting fowled up. I should put a slightly hotter plug in it during
the cold weather, but I can't be arsed.

Maybe a service will cure it?

Is that a major service with valves being checked etc?

My 6R was difficult to start and had poor idling before its 16k service. A
cleaned air filter, new plugs (only changed at 16k) and changing all 8
exhaust shims sorted the problem out.

Ah, well that answers that question.

I'd be surprised if it was the air filter since I doubt there's a lot of
dust in the air at this damp time of year. I could well be wrong
    though...

Well, if you had a Kwak, they need doing every 8k. Hondas thankfully only
need them doing every 16k and now I come to think about it, some of the
newer Kwaks are also 16k intervals for a major.

Heh, good to see you today btw. Didn't get much though apart from those
Avon tyres at £160 fitted. Bargain IYAM.
