Yes, it is way more complicated than that - which is why I put in the
paragraph you've cut, starting with 'Obviously it's a bit more complicated
    than that'.
Yes, it requires more 'work' [1] to accelerate faster, but obviously you'll
    get
to your cruising speed faster, so the acceleration phase will be shorter.
You're also allowing the engine to operate in its most efficient mode of
operation while you accelerate - so the kinetic energy you've gained has
been provided more efficiently. Petrol engines are generally more efficient
(in terms of converting energy in fuel into motive power) in high load, low
RPM operation. This is due to lower friction losses, better fuel mixing and
combustion, and lower pumping losses. Therefore to get a given amount of
acceleration, you're better off being in a higher gear, with a wider
    throttle opening.

Yes, loads of other factors - mentioned elsewhere in this thread - come into
play to negate some of the benefits of a wider throttle opening, higher
    load
mode of operation. Hence the wording of my original post, that *up to a
point* your fuel consumption *might* actually be lower if you accelerate
more quickly to your chosen cruising speed. I don't think it's 'obviously
    bollocks'.

[1] actually Work = Force x Distance - so accelerate harder, and the force
increases, but the distance decreases, to gain a given velocity.

  2. But if you don't really want to keep the records then stop. I used to
keep vastly detailed records of the weekly pop charts but I stopped that
years ago. The world didn't end.

  3. I must be getting confuddled then because I can almost hear the groans
whenever there is another Goldwing related expense. I had, wrongly it
seems, assumed that Dodger finances were a financial car crash. That
will teach me to make daft assumptions.

No, no, I don't *like* spending money on it, but I don't go without
food and light to keep the thing on the road.

Between us, the only debt is the mortgage, and that's gonna go in
    about 5 years or so.

    I haven't even got a CC balance post-NZ.

Ah, but it might. Then where would we be, eh? And it would be all my
    fault.

Plus, it means I can drag this sort off nonsense out of a hat at short
    notice.

  6. I doubt it.
Come on - jump outside of your comfort zone and stop collating the
    information ;-)

Probably do. However some of us like to know historically what we've
    spent on etc. etc. etc.

but I can just remember that sort of thing, at least for stuff other
    than groceries.

On the Tiger, I reckon I'd get better fuel economy by accelerating and
braking hard but crusing at 70 than I would by accelerating and braking
gently but crusing at 100. Of course, doing it all gently at 70 would
be even better but it's high speed not frantic acceleration that really
cripples fuel consumption IME; on the Tiger, anyway. On the Zed, it's
just pretty bad whatever I do. (Although to be fair, I couldn't put my
hand on my heart and say I've actually tried riding it gently.)

Sure, but the rather disingenious linking of the speed with the
acell/braking earlier in this thread was a red herring. Clearly the
slower you go (to some lower limit, perhaps) the better will be your
fuel consumption; similarly, the less frantically you accelerate and
brake, the less fuel you'll use.

Disingenuous, but it made you look a fool.
Sometimes you just want fuel economy, when you're on reserve and the
petrol station is miles away. Sometimes you want the best fuel economy
given certain other constraints, such as a fixed journey time.
Other times you want to balance the value of your time against fuel cost.
They all need different riding techniques.

You think so? Well, I'm flattered that you'd go to such pains, but
really, it's not worth the effort.
