Spelling a carb...

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Biker2 \(Threadstopper\), Aug 31, 2004.

  1. I have just received a brand new carb for my Velocette Clubman 500

The label on the box states that it is a carburetter but I thought it should
be spelt carburettor but Google suggests carburetor.

    Who cares ?

    1) it's spelt "V-e-r-g-a-s-e-r"
    2) the box is probably "Made in Taiwan"
    3) Google is a 'merkin company. They have thrown proper English over
board together with the tea, back then...

    Paging Tom The Kraut,

Not having a German/English dictionary on me I wonder if you could help?

I`ve been researching a certain make of carb and it`s settings for our `lil
red sprinter and the best source is a German NG.

Could you translate Nebeldeuse for me? Is it Needlejet?
A run down of the following would be handy as well.
    English-German for :-
    Mainjet.
    Pilot Jet.
    Starter Jet.
    Needle Jet.
    Throttle valve.
Also am I correct in thinking Candle is Spark Plug?

    I`d appreciate this.

"sprinter" as in the Mercedes van? - hardly, they are much too modern to
have carbs anymore... what make of carb?

Literally, "Nebeldüse" = "Fog Jet" - might be used as general
description of what the jets help to do with any fluid that passes
    through them.

Should be "Leerlaufdüse" (I've seen both, "Idle Jet" and "Pilot Jet",
    been used for it)

That should be "Kaltstartdüse", if it's connected to and controlled by
    the choke.

Zündkerze or (short form) "Kerze", yep.

http://www.mikuni.com/pdf/vmmanual.pdf gives you an exploded view and
    part list in (American) English.

On http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/mikuni/VMsingle.htm you find some more
info - interesting though that the VM28 seems to have been dumped and
replaced by the VM30. Details for that one on

    http://www.mikuni-topham.de/DEUTSCHSITE/VMDeutsch/VM2TAKT01.html - a
German Mikuni dealer infopage for VM carbs.

Thanks for the links, I`ve already browsed the German "Topham" site.

The research is for the application in a non-std way.
I`ve got no problem getting jets/parts etc.
The VM28 was never meant to be fitted to a Gilera 125!
These use either a Dellorto 20mm or sometimes a Mik VM20.

Anyway it`s sorted for now (until we fit a 172cc kit then the fun starts
    over again).
