I'd quite like a picture of you in a wooly hat, for when I need
    cheering up.

  10. does me no sartorial favours.

You little tinker. Nope. I was always told, when skiing, that it was
about three quarters (assuming you weren't wearing a hat).

    <Googles>

Well, that got me precisely nowhere!

One science site says about 70%. So I'd be right.

Another science site just says "a large percentage". So I'm rightish.

JC Penney (wtf!) says 50%. So we're both wrong.

Another popular science site says 30% (and adds that accurate info is
damned hard to find). So Bear's rightish.

The New York Times says it's generally bollocks and you lose less than
    10%. So we're both wrong.

And I can't be arsed to search more than five sites.

  11. I think it's one of those things where someone has plucked a figure out
of the air, some time in the past, and it's stuck - and nobody's ever
    actually bothered to check ;-))

I tend to wear a titfer these days - in summer my receding hairline gets
sunburned, and in winter it gets chilly.

Titfers certainly keep yer lugholes warmer.

  12. If we get two identical Champs, kit one in a hat and make him stand in
the cold and the the other we throw off brighton pier stark naked and
time how long it takes them to die, we should get a definitive answer.

  14. Well, my brief seat-of-the-pants exercise suggests that it's
over-inflated, under-inflated, and all points between. I suppose the
only safe rule is never to believe everything you're told.
True enough. Cue David Niven's story of getting a nearly-frostbitten
todger and dunking it in a glass of brandy.

The way I heard it, the brain generates so much heat from processing that it
needs to be able to dump heat fast. Without proper cooling, the brain
doesn't work too well at all. Prehuman types in the African savannah had to
get up on their hind legs to get their heads up into cooler air, so
intelligence and the erect posture arrived at the same time.

    ...stands to reason, dunnit?

If we'd had coolermasters in time we could have stayed on all fours,
bought our shoes four at a time and not have had to worry about
falling over at closing time - evolution who'd have it.

  17. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Punk hairstyles were simply a way of ensuring good brain cooling.

And the figures often refer to different things. In particular, what
    clothes you're wearing.

If you're naked, then the 10% figure is probably not too bad. If you're
wearing well insulated winter gear then 80% might not be far off the mark.
You also have to consider whether heat loss via the mouth is
considered. Breathing in frigid air and out warm air makes a significant
    difference.
