ok, after a 7 week absence off a bike due to a hernia operation, today
was the first day that I was able to take the bike out on a run.

I get to the dual carriage-way open the throttle, and low and behold,
there is one of those speed safety vans parked on the left hand verge,
with its back to the oncoming traffic and the black window open.

My question is, can they do you from the front of your bike, i.e. do
they have another camera in the drivers window to photograph the
    number plate??

Do I now have 2 weeks of panicking? I was so looking forward to
getting back on the bike, and now I'm going to be dreading the postman
    calling.

    TIA for any response

No, if they're quick they will take the number plate as you go past.

No , but if there was an operator using a manual system he can turn round
    and look at your plate.

Some camera vehicles are automatic systems though and the operator just sits
there and reads his paper - in that case you'll be fine.

When I was bogging at one of the Essex vans at a bikesafe event, the
policewoman said that it has rearward and forward facing video cameras and
they can get the number plate details from either and tie them by video
    timing .

She could have been bullshitting... I should have paid more attention
    really.

Having said that, I passed that very van whilst speeding a while back and
never got a ticket. I could have kicked myself, It was only a few weeks
earlier I that I was looking at the van at bikesafe and I could have
stopped/turned off rather than pass the van... I had time but was being a
twat, still turned out ok luckily.

No help at all really then, fingers crossed, David

    turned into doom and gloom!!

I noticed on the M1 the other week that they had secondary cameras in the
road works between Luton and Hemel. That stretch of road has the average
speed cameras taking pictures of the front numberplate. The secondary
cameras were on the bridges. To me it seemed like they were looking for
bikers? Needless to say I slowed down.

While we're doing cop-spotting. Both yesterday M1, Dark Grey SAAB (or
BMW, or AUDI?) FJ56 something or other unmarked traffic car pulling
people. Also 2 bike cops parked over the top of J24 watching
southbound traffic, no speed guns or anything and they looked fairly
relaxed but I guess they could have been the manual mop-up for
    something further north.
