Anyone know where I can get figures for number of speed cameras in the UK
    and revenue raised from them?

wittery prose along the lines of:

Actually, I heard from the French guvvernmint website
    (http://www.securiteroutiere.equipement.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/DP_27-10-03.pdf
[1]) , that there are in the region of 5000 [2][3] in the UK. The
document also says that the UK system is 'a model in the domain of
    road safety

    Revuene-wise, I couldn't tell you.

    [1] In French, natürlich.
[2] Hmm, in a previous post, I may have said 2000.
[3] This includes mobile radars too.

If you fancy a laugh, although I can't vouch for the veracity of this
(received from the Thunderace list) -

    "British newspaper report:
Four youths from Canberra, Australia pulled off a trick of
breathtaking bravado in order to gain revenge on a mobile speed camera
van operating in the area. Three of the group approached the van and
distracted the operator's attention by asking a series of questions
about how the equipment worked and how many cars the operator could
catch in a day. Meanwhile, the fourth musketeer sneaked to the front
of the van and unscrewed its numberplate. After bidding the van
operator goodbye, the friends returned home, fixed the number plate to
their car and drove through the camera's radar at high speed - 17
times. As a result, the automated billing system issued 17 speeding
    tickets to itself."

Local legend has it that the same approach was taken - allegedly -
with a car of the same make and colour, and fited with a cloned number
plate, as that belonging to the former Chief Constable's wife.

thingie it is she drives go past a speedcamera at 157mph. Few weeks
in jail, right? Right, where is the nitrous...
