    Cane fumbled, fiddled and fingered:
    ditto ... they seem to be unable to police the existing legislation
    regarding mobile phone users so I cannot see them being able to police
    this one that well either ...

    This bit almost seems sensible:

    "It also proposes flexible speeding fines which would distinguish
    between those travelling a couple of miles over the speed limit in a
    non-residential area away from schools and other dangers, and those
    travelling at high speeds or in sensitive areas."

    But this bit just seems pointless:

    "The penalty for using a mobile phone could increase from £30 to £60 and
    three licence endorsement points under the bill."

    What's wrong with just penalising people for "driving without due care
    and attention"?

    Because people speed up when they know there isn't a camera.

    And that, of course, leads to millions of deaths annually.

    But GPS warning devices are OK so this does'nt support your argument

    Lets see now:

    It also proposes flexible speeding fines which would distinguish between
    those travelling a couple of miles over the speed limit in a
    non-residential area away from schools and other dangers, and those
    travelling at high speeds or in sensitive areas.

    <check>

    The penalty for using a mobile phone could increase from £30 to £60 and
    three licence endorsement points under the bill.

    <check>

    It would also allow courts to force the worst drink-drivers to retake
    their driving tests.

    <check>

    Other measures include clear guidance on how fast emergency vehicles can
    travel, more retraining courses for bad drivers and allowing police
    better use of motor insurance information.

    <check>

    GPS is the best solution for Gatso and Laser detectors only tell you
    that you have just been zapped!!

    Then why shouldn't they use their mobile phone?

    So the cameras are nicking emergency vehicles and the health service can't
    afford the tickets ?
    perhaps i missed something here ...

  15. The devices are currently legal. A proposed amendment to the law will
    seek to make them illegal.

    When owners of handguns were compelled to hand over their legitimately
    owned possessions, after the firearms laws were amended, they received
    compenstion (eventually). Perhaps owners of radar and laser detectors
    need to ask if the Government's plans for their possessions also
    include a similar compensation scheme?

    GPS warning devices don't tell you if a camera site is currently live.
    The argument against radar/laser detectors is that drivers will realise the
    gatso housing is empty and speed past it.

    Personally , I still wouldn't take the chance even if my detector was
    telling me it was empty , and I doubt many others would either

    What like the owners of 175/185/200/250cc bikes rendered all but
    worthless when the Government reduced the learner capacity to 125cc?
    Did'nt notice a lot of compo about then?

    Wonder how they'll solve the increase in unlicensed driving, potential
    unemployment and the complete failure of it to reduce the road death toll.
