I don't think that's true. More info please.

Forget it... don't answer... I'm not thinking properly.

You can determine the speed at moment of impact but you cannot determine
the free running speed prior to that.

They couldn't even if they wanted to.

Surely the speed at the instant just before impact is very close to
the speed at the point of impact just before the massive deceleration
    caused by the impact itself.

What do you mean by free running speed?

I did it on Thursday and had an absolutely cracking run apart from the dozo
car drivers creeping past each other with a 1mph difference and the idiot
car driver literally a foot off my back bumper.

What? Ban them? Or a driver couldn't slow down at all of them?

Assuming the former, it leads to the interesting prospect of the
location of speed camera being made a state secret and we would not be
allowed to know where they are, not even to defend against a speeding
    prosecution.

I think it illustrates perfectly Scameras causing accidents. Except at
3AM you can't break the speed limit, there's too much traffic.

Now we get the braking club every mile or so....

You know, I did just that a week or so ago, and it was one of the most

The car might have been doing 70mph (free running speed) before the driver
noticed the potential situation and braked hard impacting at 30mph. The free
running speed can often be estimated by skid marks, witnesses and other bits
    of evidence.

There is nobody that does not understand that. As you well know.
However people feel compelled to continually post the obvious.

of course he knows that and like all the other drivers on the A13
this morning at 6.00 am will be driving in "waves". There is a
very obvious issue of "are arbitrary speed limits worth adhering
too at all times" which has been debated here ad nauseum, so
there is no need for mock surprise that someone is breaking at a
speed camera like the blackwall tunnel approach where the 30
limit starts way back from the hazard.

Could you point out where they are on the M1? There are also many
camera signs nowhere near cameras. There is one entering Sidcup,
    no camera anywhere.

As an aside has anyone noticed how bad the speed limit signs are
on the A13 London end? I keep seeing random 30 repeaters mixed in
with the 40s or 50s (and they are not for side roads being in
    centre of dual).

look at the gantry, its there. I expect disused but i'm not
chancing it. Most of us know the difference between a SPECs and a
    surveillance camera.

me neither, there was a roadworks limit there a while ago,
    perhaps they just forgot it?

Yes, the former. They could not ban the use of GPS based systems since
they are no more than a device telling you that you are coming up on a
waypoint. To ban them would require the banning of all satnav systems.

The speed at which the vehicle was travelling before the driver started
    braking (if at all).

    1. Witnesses are not accurate speed indicators.
    2. There are no skid marks with a modern ABS system.

If they know that why do they continually whinge about being fined?
