    What's up, don't you like having to obey the law?

    Eh?

    Audacity has nothing to do with it - look it up in the Highway Code.

    Can't see it being a best-seller, to be honest.

    If I was oblivious I probably either would not be here or have no

    while I agree with you in principle please consider my Hyundai
    Amica (999cc) AUTO. :)
    However I never have trouble joining duals in it and have never
    had to stop on a slip as 50 is usually enough to join.

    Evidently you know how roads work then, and drive accordingly.

  9. It's actually the law.

    The broken line seperating the slip from the 1st lane of the carriage
    way is a give way line.

    And what the hell are you worrying about the 2nd lane for, when you are
    trying to join the first one? Or do you get upset at the audacity of
    drivers who won't let you jump to lanes at once.

    Just buy one from some cloggy.
    Radar detectors were made illegal here from 1st Jan 2004, so there must be
    a few unwanted detectors available...

    Which is precisely the point which demonstrates that speed cameras are
    about making money and not safety. If it was really vital that we
    slowed to the speed limit in these areas then the cameras would be
    bright orange with flashing lights and big signs saying 'Slow down
    now, and we mean it!' on the back, not hidden behind trees and road
    signs. Any time a camera took a photograph, it would be considered a
    failure, since it hadn't stopped someone from speeding.

    Of course, if cameras were set up like that, the police wouldn't make
    money from them... which is why they are hidden and why they want
    detectors banned. They should be _encouraging_ use of detectors so we
    know to slow down for these 'accident black-spots'.

    Think of legislation banning handguns. Consider the compensation paid
    to owners of previously legal handguns after they surrendered their
    weapons to comply with the new legislation. The government floated the
    idea of banning speed trap detectors about two years ago, and were
    warned they would have to compensate owners of the devices for the
    loss. Obviously someone has a very short memory. Perhaps a few hundred
    letters of reminder might help?

  15. Better fit it to all the elks then, and genetically modify snow to have
    a much higher friction co-efficient, or that or invent the hover Saab,
    so that it doesn't have to rely on common physics of rubber tyre on
    frozen compressed snow then.

  16. Harry The Horse raved thus:

    :: considerably more than the speed limit, that is the problem. Busy
    :: slip roads are made substantially more dangerous because of idiots
    :: who consider that it is their 'right' to go at 90+ in the second
    :: line, making it very difficult for slower moving traffic to move
    :: into the second lane to make way for cars on the slip road to come
    :: onto the dual carriage way. Fortunately a couple of the more
    :: dangerous slip roads have been made safer by the installation of
    :: speed cameras.

    You have no obligation to do this; the dashed line at the end of the slip
    road means 'Give Way'...

  19. Daytona raved thus:

    :: I do have a big problem with -
    ::
    :: - the council procedures for consulting on speed limit changes
    :: (failing to consult affected users, and not carrying out accident
    :: analysis, overriding opinions from qualified police advanced drivers)
    ::
    :: - police refusal to attend every accident and prosecute where an
    :: offence committed
    ::
    :: - decline in detection and prosecution by the police of careless or
    :: dangerous driving, the most frequent cause of accidents (down 45%
    :: over the decade)

  20. So is keeping to the speed limit. But whenever that is pointed out to speed
    nuts they dismiss the relevance of it.
    Your response amply demonstrates the need for speed cameras. If you can't
    see the sense in moderating your speed near a busy slip road then you should
    to be obliged to do so.
