  8. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember Salad Dodger
Hefty spring balance. But the locking ring always fucks the setting up,
    so do it by feel.

Cheers, everyone: I'll do it the old fashioned way, then.

Cue "has anyone got a C-spanner?" post at the weekend.

I have an adjustable one. You can buy them at Gericke for about 12 quid,
when they have stock of them. They are a popular item

Despite appearances to the contrary, I'm not *always* a ham-fisted
    bodger in the garage.

What's wrong with a drift and a hammer?

    Works for me!

No, you're suggesting using a proper drift. A ham fisted bodger would
    use a screwdriver.

I haven't a drift, but I do have a big, broken (with the end filed
    flat) screwdriver.

    Which I won't be using.
    Certainly not.

I notice that Honda, in their infinite wisdom, have decided to route
part of the wiring loom down the centre of the steering stem.[1]

    Oh joy.

Anyway, I'm all bearing; shock; spring and fork-oiled up now, and am
just waiting for my braided hoses to arrive before battle is
    joined.[2]

    It'll be like a new bike when I'm finished.[3]

Sometime next Spring, by the look of it.

    [1] For the self-cancelling indicators.
[2] The new clutch is going in when the back end is apart too.
[3] New oil, filter, and carb balance is on the cards, as well.

    OH- Guest

    <snip>

I always do my steering head bearings by feel, not numbers. If you
absolutely want to torque the nut you may use the standard C-spanner
and a suitable spring scale (sorry if the term is wrong, the sort of thing
bragging sports fishers have) to pull the handle. Say for example
20 kp (aka kgf) times 20 cm should give your 40 Nm.

Just kidding, he'll have used the 'appropriate engineering solution'

Since he trained the proper way [1], as did I, we're a bit more
capable of making our own tools rather than the modern "black box
changing, plug the ECU into an analyser" car 'technician'.

    Cheers,

Got a set of carb balancing gauges if you are interested that I used on my
    Wing.
Could let you borrow 'em or assist sometime soon
